Sarah is very patient with my daughter. She tailors the class to her personality. She gets her to do the class in a fun way. She makes the class enjoyable but still focuses on her growth. She pushes Alexa enough to keep her going. She motivates her to learn. My daughter looks forward to her lessons. Recommend!

Latin has given me the basic understanding of how languages work that has enabled me to learn other languages as diverse as Hebrew, Russian, and Yiddish. I can connect Latin grammatical concepts and root words to familiar ideas to accelerate your learning and strengthen your skills.

I am in my second year of homeschooling and had prayed specifically for a male teacher to come alongside us and assist in our homeschooling adventure. Although my son, who is six, is not having any difficulties at the moment, homeschooling is still new to me and I was hoping I could find someone who would keep us accountable and help fill in any gaps in my son's schooling. We have found Maurice to be just what we needed. He is engaging and encouraging and has been helpful in sharing strategies and teaching techniques that foster comprehensive learning and not merely memorization.

I have a BA in Latin and Greek. It is true that these languages are “dead” and can be difficult to learn, but they are still useful in the modern world. An intensive study of Latin, for instance, provides a fundamental understanding of the language through the explanation of many grammar topics. This results in a fuller understanding of English grammar and vocabulary. It is good to develop the discipline required to learn Latin in high school and beyond.

In addition to tutoring, I teach Latin from scratch. I have typed up a series of Latin Outlines based on college course material. Outlines are divided into three sections: Grammar, Vocabulary, and Exercises.

My 12 year old son was hesitant to have Latin lessons based on the experience he had in a classroom setting. He just had his first lesson and immediately told me afterward, "I learned more from Jonathan than I did all year in class." He seemed to really connect with Jonathan and is actually looking forward to his next lesson.

After searching in vain for a latin tutor for our son in our neighborhood, we reluctantly turned our search to the internet. We're so glad we did. Jonathan is an excellent latin teacher! He evaluated our son's current ability level in latin and has guided him in lessons designed to address his weak areas. Our son is a good student and will work hard when challenged, but he also needs structure and guidance from his teacher. Jonathan provided both and has inspired him to pursue latin with enthusiasm. We are very grateful to have found such a wonderful tutor, and we would highly recommend Jonathan Hills to any student serious about improving his/her latin skills.

Experienced Latin teacher of 2 years full-time and 1 year of apprenticeship available for eager students of all ages and abilities. I structure my lessons and homework so that students practice some speaking and listening (usually highly neglected in teaching "dead" languages) as well as writing (often neglected) and reading. I prefer classical pronunciation but will teach ecclesiastical if the student's only goal for Latin is singing/church. I typically use Wheelock's as a starting text but have experience with Jenney's, Ecce Romani, Henle, and Latina Christian as well--all texts have strengths and weaknesses.

Our Latin tutors work with students of all ages: kids, teenagers, adults, and even seniors. They can teach you the origins of Latin, in addition to the vocabulary, the grammar, the punctuation, the consonants, the vowels, allophones, sentence structures, gender differences, historical influence, and other technical aspects. Learn about and experience the physical, social, and emotional benefits of learning Latin.

Latin can take up to 1000 hours of deliberate practice to gain General Professional Fluency. A private tutor can help keep you focused, committed, and motivated, not to mention their ability to help you overcome any language hurdles you have trouble with.

Your tutor offers you expert language learning techniques and tips, and helps you develop good practice habits, so that you can maximize your learning experience, and achieve your goals faster. Alternative Language Lesson Methods:
Latin Apps and Books

For independent language learners, downloading popular language apps - free and premium - or checking out Latin books from the library are excellent options. They cost less overall than private lessons, and allow you to learn at your own pace, on your own time, and the topics of your own choosing. The downside is that you don't have personal instruction for the times you need to overcome any challenging obstacles. Learning with a partner or a teacher gives you the personal interaction you need to verbally practice and attempt the language.

Group Classes

Taking small group classes to learn a new language is another good way to acquire basic language skills, immediate feedback, and human interaction. It combines both passive and active learning. A professional instructor leading the class can keep the agenda tight and ensure each student gets the chance to participate, and get their questions answered. It can also be more affordable than private 1-on-1 lessons. Find local group classes near you by doing a quick Google search, or better yet, sign up for TakeLessons Live, the new and affordable way to learn languages, and to learn how to play musical instruments in small groups of 5-8. You pay a flat monthly or annual fee, and get unlimited access to hundreds of classes online every month. Perfect for beginners.

At TakeLessons, we understand every student is different, and that the best way to learn any language is to try a combination of various learning techniques. Try all of the above, find out what works best for you, and then study hard and smart. It's only a matter of time before you achieve your goals.
