Mike is a super musician himself, but he has met me at my true-beginning level. Mike has a way of making you feel very comfortable while imparting proper techniques and advice. He is very patient with my beginning fumbles, while challenging me to make some progress each week. I really recommend him as a teacher. In three weeks, I have three songs I am working on and four finger rolls, with advice on how to learn to be more smooth when chording. This pace was adjusted for myself, as he will adjust to your own current level. You get some funny stories too (always helps).

Very good at teaching technique as well as breaking songs down so they are easier to pick up.

I'm as new as they come; zero banjo experience. Mike was absolutely outstanding! In my first lesson he taught me how to tune, 3 major chords, strumming, picking, rolls, and I got my first song to practice. I highly recommend Mike!

I am a senior student and Jesse knew what was needed to develop a course of classwork and homework to enable me to have more fun with the melodious ukulele. I appreciate his clear, concise, and congenial approach — serious, mindful, and leisurely.

I am quite pleased with Joshua's growth thus far! After playing his bass guitar with a start up teacher for 3 years, Joshua was ready for more. He needed someone new to push him to the next level. Not only is Damien perfecting Joshua's skills, but is introducing Joshua to music composition. I absolutely LOVE THAT!!! Thank you Damien because every time we visit, Joshua leaves with something new! FABULOUS INSTRUCTOR!!!

Damien is extremely professional and does an excellent job explaining the fundamentals. As Albert Einstein said, "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." Damien has a way of explaining concepts so they are easily understood and retained, even for more complex subjects.

Mel is a very patient and knowledgable teacher. I feel like I fumble along at the beginning of a lesson but by the end Mel has improved my technique and timing. I would definitely recommend Mel to anyone who wants to learn or improve on their instrument!

I've been teaching banjo for 4 years helping students develop a love for the instrument and learn more about music along the way. My specialty is Scruggs style picking, but I'm also comfortable teaching clawhammer, reno, or melodic styles and enjoy working on hybrid and progressive styles, too. Within the first few lessons you'll have a solid base of picking and chord changes and even a few simple songs under your belt. Moving on from there I will craft lessons to move you toward a "goal song," making sure to cater your progress to your needs while keeping a focus on good technique. I enjoy working with students of all ages and experiences and I can't wait to meet you!

I like to make learning an instrument fun and easy to fit into your schedule!

If you're an adult finally getting around to learning your dream instrument or a child following your passion of playing music I tailor your lessons specifically to you. We look at what you want to play, pick specific songs that you want to learn, and learn the techniques you need to play these songs. It sounds simple, but it's so effective and much more fun to learn this way!

If you have any questions for me hit the "Ask Grant A Question" button, I would love to hear from you and discuss your interests in music!

Banjo Lessons

Do you want to learn how to play the banjo? If yes, then you’ve come to the right place. Private banjo lessons and classes with a TakeLessons Certified™ teacher near you or online accelerates progress, increases enjoyment, and improves every beginner's chances of becoming an expert player.

The banjo is a fabulous instrument which is most commonly used in country and bluegrass music. There are 4-string, 5-string, and even 6-string banjos, all of which are played like a guitar. Though it involves similar guitar playing concepts, playing the banjo has other tricks that are specifically intended for the instrument. In order to make your banjo playing more accurate and distinct, you need to learn all those techniques and technicalities. It will also help if you have music theory to back up your technique.

Your banjo instructor will teach you - whether you take in-home, studio, or online classes - how to read banjo tabs, banjo chords, and tune your banjo, among others. Your instructor should also provide you with practical tips. For example, if you are going to purchase a banjo, you may want to consider a Gibson, Fender, or Epiphone Masterbuilt Banjo since they are great beginner brands. That is just one of the many tips you can get from our banjo lessons.

Our banjo instructors work with students of all ages: kids, teenagers, adults, and even seniors. We guarantee a customized experience that will exceed your expectations. In fact, we are so committed to your happiness that we offer all new customers a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee on your first lesson.
