Learn to Play Drums in the Music Capital of the World

By Aaron P. - Austin Drum Teacher

Hi, my name is Aaron, and I teach drum lessons in Austin. I've played drums for 17 years, and I've been teaching students for 11 years. My favorite rhythms and grooves are derived from jazz, progressive rock, Latin, Indian, and African music.

If you want to take drum lessons in Austin, you’re in luck; it’s a great place for drummers! I play in eight different groups, and I get called to play with several other groups when their main drummer has another gig. Austin is full of talented singer-songwriters who need great drummers to play their tunes. If you play the songs right, you will get called again and again. If you are disciplined enough to follow through with your drum lessons, you will have rewarding results. The greatest thing that I have learned over the years is that there is something rewarding in every style of music, and learning drums will open your mind up to many other styles.

Need some inspiration to practice drums? Here are some great local venues where you can hear live music.

Central Market

Yes, it’s a grocery store, but there’s also a deli and coffee bar, and from 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Saturdays, you can witness some of the greatest music in Austin. If you live further south, head over to the Westgate location. The best thing about Central Market - you can listen to live music for free!

Strange Brew

Strange Brew is a coffeehouse where talented local bands play 90-minute sets from early in the morning to late at night. I’ve seen and played with some of the top musicians in town at Strange Brew. They take music seriously here, and it’s one of the best places in town.

One-2-One Bar

This place has a very eclectic vibe, and the music is always great. One awesome thing about this venue is the interactive drum clinics. I know a handful of great drummers who run the clinics, and I recommend checking them out.

The best way to improve as a drummer is to play with more experienced musicians. There are lots of opportunities to play with other great drummers in Austin. On Monday nights, you can join a jazz jam at the Elephant Room or check out a blues jam at Maggie Mae’s. For your middle-of-the-week music fix, stop by the Brass House for a Wednesday night jazz jam, or head over to Dozen Street to hear some awesome funk music.

With awesome drum teachers and an amazing music scene, Austin is a great place to learn drums. I wish you the best of luck on your musical journey!

I have been playing drums for 16 years. It is my true passion. We can go over basics like breathing, technique, posture, holding the sticks, hitting the cymbals and drums, and tuning the drums. We can also get into rhythms, grooves, licks, tricks, fills, odd times, odd subdivisions, reading, learning solos, and more! I'm game for everything. We can set up an extra kit at your place or my place.

About Aaron
I was an engineering tutor at University of Texas at Austin from 2006-2009. I graduated from UT with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 2009. I am very familiar with the UT engineering courses (from the beginning to the end).

While I was at UT, I also studied jazz drumming with Brannen Temple. I have been playing professionally for over ten years with lots of different bands. Teaching and playing music are the most gratifying things for me. But I also like to teach math!

I have been teaching high school math, physics, and music theory at Premier High School of North Austin for five years (2009-2014). I am a certified teacher by the state of Texas.

I began playing drums 15 years ago and since then have played drums in a variety of settings. I am comfortable with technique of a wide variety of genres and know how to write drum notation

About Michael
I am a classically trained and professional musician who has worn many different musical hats over the years. I began playing drums when I was 14, in Houston, TX with Craig LeMay, and since then I have learned many different string and world instruments. I studied music theory and vocal performance at the Florence University of the Arts in Italy, taken sitar lessons from Mita Nag in Kolkatta, India, and jazz performance in Austin, TX with Joey Colarusso. I have played in many different bands over the years, such as accompanying Michael Kiwanuka with the musical saw, accompanying Katie Sachs with the musical saw, playing bass guitar with Halaska and DJing private events with Spacecraft Entertainment. I have been teaching music to special education students, in Austin public schools, and foster children with Kids in a New Groove. I have als
o built and modified many of my own instruments and ready to teach you some quirky musical production skills as well. I believe listening and being adaptable to an individual student's needs are the keys to teaching anyone to express themselves through music.

After studying Spanish for 2 years at the university level and extensive travel to Latin America I am fluent in Spanish in both the academic and conversational sides of the language.

Michael is doing a great job getting me started on my piano journey. The exercises and drills he is teaching me have helped me feel comfortable at the keyboard. I've even learned a song already, after just 2 lessons!

Highly recommended.

My 8 year old daughter took piano lessons from Michael and she really enjoyed learning the basics in fun ways. He was VERY patient and able to meet her where she was at, but still knew how to challenge her. I would recommend Michael to any beginner level piano player!

Really good teacher. I had never played piano before and Michael was great at instantly giving me things to work on and gave off the impression that lessons were tailored to what I was interested in and the direction I personally wanted to go with the piano. I'd definitely recommend him to anyone else looking for a good instructor in piano or any other musical instrument he works with.

About Drew
Growing up in a family with myriad different cultural backgrounds, I started early with an appreciation for a broad range of ideas and perspectives. Equally early I developed an immense love for music and sound, picking up drumsticks as my main means of expression.

I worked as the Extreme Music Coordinator as well as Music Director at WBUL, at USF in Tampa, FL; Graduated with an A.S. in Recording Arts and a Masters in Entertainment Business from Full Sail in Orlando, FL.

I then spent almost 2 years teaching English in Japan, playing and recording with several bands there. After moving back to the states, I started performing with bands in my native Florida, as well as participating in various music/dance collaborations, improvisational events, and playing cover band gigs.

After hours I play in an indie band called MCG, do session
work, compose, and love exploring my newest home, Austin TX. I look forward to meeting and sharing my love of music with you!

Snare drum and drum kit.

About Darrell
Why these lessons are different:
- Formally trained conductor/composer/producer
- Individual or group session options including full band production
- A long roster of satisfied clients
- Broad base of musical styles (rock, classical, jazz, blues, metal, bluegrass, folk, theater, big band, symphonic, pop, punk, country, march, gospel, avant-garde...)
- Over 20 yrs teaching experience and work with recognized professionals including work in some of the top-rated private schools in the United States
- Over 30 years performing experience

Instrument-specific instruction:
- Voice
- Guitar [Spanish, acoustic, electric]
- Electric Bass
- Piano/Keyboard
- Woodwinds [specializing in saxophones]
- Percussion
- Brass & Bowed Strings [performance preparation only]

My process is based on (but does not adhere strictly to
) the Classical approach to Western tonal harmony and asks that the students develop certain fundamentals of technique and theory. In my experience, this structure creates the strongest foundation for pupils to build the rest of their musical lives on, whether professionally or solely for personal enjoyment. All of my students are on the fast track to studying music theory. Whatever level they are at when I start with them, I guide their efforts into bringing the students up to a certain level of comprehension regarding the mathematical aspects of music and how it relates to their instruments. This understanding of theoretical principles of sound allows the students to play any style of music they wish, no matter how their tastes may change throughout their lives.

Curriculum Gradation:
Elements of rhythm
Elements of pitch
Elements of dynamics
Elements of articulation
Reading/Writing notation
Tone development
Finding/Expanding your range
Dexterity, speed, and accuracy
How to project
How to advance to the next level
Music theory
Playing by ear
Improvisational techniques
Finding your signature style
Expression/Lyricism
Composition/Arrangement
Project Management

My 16 year old son loves his lessons with Darrell and looks forward to them every week. He'd been taking guitar lessons elsewhere that were okay-ish, but this is so much more. Darrell is great, not only does he get along with and make my son want to learn, but at the same time they are working on voice, he is also teaching keyboard and working on the guitar! The drums are what we all want to play, let's be honest. The good news is EVERY one CAN learn to play the drums, and everyone can get better at them.

I am here to guide you on your (or child's) drumming journey. We will first cultivate a love for the drums -that must always come first. Then we will carve out a unique path to highlight your strengths as well as challenge your weaknesses. We will learn the rhythms and grooves of your favorite music, as well as learn various styles of music such as Jazz, Motown, Reggae, and even Country. We will learn the work of some of the most influential drummers of all time. Along the way you will learn 4-way coordination, how to play confidently before a crowd as well as in a band, read rhythm and charts, Learn all of the essential drum rudiments, and learn to practice efficiently.

Most of all, we will have fun doing it!

My name is Chad. I've been teaching drums for 13yrs, and performing for 18. I studied drums at Musician's Institute ...

About Chad
I started out as a guitarist. My brother was gifted an acoustic guitar one Christmas but never played it. I picked it up one day and a few months later I was practicing 3+ hours a day. I loved it, but the moment I bought my first drum set everything changed.

I had no idea the potential for creativity, therapy, intrigue, and challenge that was held behind the drum kit. I learned quickly that THIS would be my instrument. That 3+ hours per day moved from guitar to drum set, much to the annoyance of my roommates who had to listen to it (I later bought an electric set and solved that issue).

I soon began to take lessons with a local teacher (still the best I ever had) and my skills increased exponentially. I started playing in bands and at churches. I had to learn to play with a click track or backing tracks - which wasn't easy but made me
better.

Before I knew it I quit architecture school, which hadn't been fun or challenging for quite sometime, and I began to practice, study, and save up for drum school. I didn't know which one I wanted to go to yet. After visits to several it became clear to me that Musician's Institute was the place for me. To my surprise I got in, just barely, and began to work on my craft. I practiced 6hrs a day during the week, and 10 on the weekends. I was playing in up-to 6 bands at a time, and I still had to learn my course work. It was one of the biggest stretches I ever had, and it paid off! My abilities went through the roof! But more importantly I learned more about myself, became more confident, and learned more about what I wanted to do with my life, which wasn't performance, even though that is still fun. I learned that I didn't want to be on the road too often, and I didn't want to play as a hired gun in some random gigging band. I also learned that I could teach, and that teaching was a good fit for me.

While in Hollywood I studied with Rob Carson (two time world snare champion), Chuck Flores (Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman, Shelly Manne, etc...), Chuck Silverman (Latin playing legend), Glen Sobel (with now with Alice Cooper), and the list goes on.

I have played in all sorts of local bands, Top 40 Bands, Wedding Bands, Jazz Bands, Etc...

It was when I discovered I had a knack for teaching that I began taking students in full swing. At one point I had 46 students each week. My students have gone on to play in bands, become lead snare drummers at their schools, and a few have even become teachers themselves.
