Understanding Music Theory has many benefits. When performing music, understanding the theory behind a piece can help you to effectively improvise, make it easier to memorize and allow you to understand what is happening or about to happen.

It allows you to analyze compositions that you like and understand why they sound so cool. It could be that it is using a tried and true technique that has been around or "breaking the rules." In memorable composition, there is usually a surprise.

My area of specialty is commercial music which incorporates popular music and jazz.

The content of study would depend on what your current level of knowledge and what you want to accomplish.

About Shawn

Shawn has been teaching private lessons since 2014 and is currently available to teach lessons at his home studio and online. Shawn has helped students go from no musical knowledge to giving public performances. Shawn received his training at the UC, Irvine where he received his Bachelor of Mus

In my piano studio, we approach theory from the standpoint of Composition and Performance. Counterpoint and Figured Bass are explored, as well as other Classical techniques and Examples

About Brent

I have thirty years of Piano playing experience and have taught Piano privately for the past six years. I have studied in private lessons for over ten years, with different teachers. (I have also performed extensively in the past as an Electric Guitarist for jazz, big-band, funk and metal bands.)

As a teacher of music (violin, voice, and choral) and a Classical singer, and colleague of Brent, I think the most important aspect of teaching is to take a personal approach with each student to see what "fits." Every student learns differently, and Brent recognizes that. He puts a tremendous amount of thought and creativity into the development of his students. Too many teachers today have a "cookie cutter" approach to teaching, and in my own experience, this turns students away from working on music later in their lives. Brent has the opposite approach, he is committed to developing the skills and love for Classical music simultaneously in the student, which has a more long-lasting affect on their schoolwork, concentration, character, and social life.

He is a very dedicated classic artist that is very knowledgeable in his profession. I strongly recommend that everyone work with him.
Cloret C.
Without reservation, recommend Brent as an enthusiastic and thoughtful instructor-mentor to those seeking to actually enjoy the experience of mastering music and piano in particular.
As an observer, I'm impressed with Brent's teaching method, and ability to rekindle in young adults the interest and enthusiasm they may have experienced in former times for playing music at the piano.
As a sensitive and proficient accompanist, Brent works patiently and conscientiously with the singer; putting one at ease, even performing the most challenging works of classical composers.

I've been tutoring in harmony for about 4 months and I teach learning scales, how to build chords, the basics of writing a chord progression and melody, and tensions.

About Sarah

Hi! My name's Sarah and I am a musician who has been teaching for over 10 years! I strive to find a path that works best for the individual. Every musical plan and self-made curriculum I bring to a lesson is focused on helping that particular student develop. It's never a one-size fits all lesson pl

Sarah is very easy to work with, always interested in helping you the student have fun with the sax, as she has. Despite her great experience and background (or because of it?) she never seemed bored or working beneath herself with a beginner. I could say more, but I better take this time to practice!

"I was very hesitant to learn about music theory in general, as I have been led to believe it is a boring and monotonous field to learn about. Avenira changed all that negative thought about music for me after just a few short lessons! I listen to music differently now and am always noting intricacies in compositions/songs that I never had noticed before, and even have gone as far to write a few on my own songs. I highly recommend Avenira for any music-related teaching; she is extremely knowledgeable and very obviously loves what she is doing.

Can't wait to learn more from her in the future!!"
