Banjo:
If country picking, blue grass, or even pop/rock is a favorite of yours then banjo is a really fun instrument to learn. As with all instruments I teach, we would start with basics and in no time the be picking and strumming away on songs you love. I also incorporate learning the notes, chords, theory, and picking, strumming, techniques and rhythms to become a well rounded musician.

About Karen

Hi! My name is Karen D. I’ve had the pleasure of performing, singing, writing, and recording since I was seven years old. Besides being an Honor Graduate of Berklee School of Music, I have been a lifelong student of the international world-renowned instructors Dante Pavone and Charlie Banacos.

Karen obviously loves the piano & guitar. She’s probably an excellent teacher for those instruments. Why do I say that? That’s what she talked about! She spent half my lesson trying to convince me to learn one of those instruments. Could work on listening skills! Not even sure if she owns a set of bongos herself. Didn’t start teaching me anything until last 10 min & then I had to leave early anyway. So 50 min out of 60 and about 5 I actually learned a few things I could have been practicing for at least 30 min of class. Use her if you want to learn something else other than bongos.

Ms. Karen did a pretty good job, she had ideas for the lesson and provided ideas for the next lesson. She went out of her way to help me with this new idea---------"music" and "reading music." If there was any short fall in the lesson it was on my side and my preparation failings. I have no problem recommending Ms. Karen to others. Regards, JC

Extremely knowledgeable! Karen is a superb guitar instructor. Honestly, I was struggling. Discouraged! She helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and moved me from beginner to intermediate in a matter of months. If you’re getting tired of learning from YouTube and smart phone apps, let Karen kick start your guitar playing. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks Karen!!

I've played guitar since I was eight years old and various other stringed instruments for several years. I love the banjo sound and played a bit on my original album Heliotropism. I'd love to help novice players get their feet wet with the instrument, strumming and plucking away at their favorite songs.

About Gio

I studied music at UCF (Orlando), focusing on classical and jazz guitar, but I also have years of experience playing rock, blues, folk, hip-hop, and musical theater on both guitar and drums. I have been teaching guitar, drums, and piano for about eight years to students of all ages. Music is wha

I highly recommend Mel for fiddle. He had a lot of really good tips and was very willing to find songs that fit the kind of music I wanted to play. Highly recommend!

I absolutely love Mel’s lessons and look forward to them every week! I haven’t played seriously in years and have developed some bad bowing habits and difficulty with pitch over time and was close to not playing anymore. After reading the other reviews, I decided to give him a try and am so thankful I did!! My bowing and intonation is improving, he incorporates some music theory appropriate to what we are learning to master the song. I can’t wait to see where I am in 6 months from now! Thank you Mel, my passion for music is returning and am looking forward to my audition in the community orchestra next season!
Hannah
I just started working with Mel and he is awesome! He really listened to my goals and the type of music I am interested in playing and he is planning our lessons based on that. He is very good at explaining things and giving examples. I look forward to our lessons. Highly recommend!

If you want an in depth program which I recommend or if you are a person who wants to learn a few songs that's ok. If you are a newbie there are basics you need: hand position, tuning the banjo and learning a few basic rolls and simple chords. I can teach you Scruggs style, Don Reno style, Bill Keith Melodic Style, Pat Cloud Jazz style or other areas one wants to pursue.
I don't like to teach 1/2 hr lessons as it seems to short a time for a good lesson. If you insist I can do a 1/2hr lesson. I hate to add this, so many people will not practice and they lose interest quickly. I took lessons with Bill Keith every week and he told me if I didn't practice he would know it and cut me back to bi-weekly lessons and if I persisted with no practice he would fire me. He said I don't want to waste my time nor your father's money. It is worth the time to practice even though you can't see the point but suddenly you will reach a plateau where you sound great. By the way I never ...

About Thomas

I'm patient with my students and my main goal is to have them learn something that will give them pleasure in their life and the possibility of performing later on. If a student wants to go far then I can give him or her more in depth chord theory on the banjo and different scales like Pentatonic,

"It's nice having a pro like Richard customize the lessons because he creates a greater understanding of music theory as a whole and then can bring it back down to a specific application like practicing scales with a clawhammer technique. I can tell he's gradually moving me along to meet my personal goals. You can't get that out of a book or a video."

Here is a Kool layed back kinda guy that is a musician and a real good instructor. He has taken me from zero to cords and rolls. He listens well and is flexible enough that you learn at your own speed. Get in line for this Guy. Thanks Ryan!"

Are Heavy Metal Banjos The Next Big Thing?

Loud, jangly, and twangy, the banjo is an instrument with a distinctive voice that immediately evokes the spirit of the American South. Long a mainstay of bluegrass music, banjos have recently been incorporated into pop music as well by bands like Mumford and Sons. And, if YouTube trends are any indication, it looks like the banjo is making another genre shift! A pack of viral videos featuring banjo covers of hard rock classics are making the rounds and proving that banjos can shred just a …
