Bassoon:
A woodwind instrument in the double reed family that typically plays music written in the bass and tenor clefs, and occasionally the treble. Appearing in its modern form in the 19th century, the bassoon figures prominently in orchestral, concert band, and chamber music literature. The bassoon is a non-transposing instrument known for its distinctive tone colour, wide range, variety of character and agility. Listeners often compare its warm, dark, reedy timbre to that of a male baritone voice. Someone who plays the bassoon is called a bassoonist. The lessons will consist of breathing and finger techniques, learning notes and rhythms and how to read. Very quickly songs will be incorporated and as the student progresses we will work on learning scales and how to solo.

I am an active performer and teacher of bassoon, and am still an active learner on my instrument. Lessons with me are fun, engaging, and informative on this unique and often difficult instrument. I strive for my students to love the bassoon and enjoy working on their craft, whether a beginning band student or an aspiring professional. I earned my Masters of Music in Bassoon Performance at University of North Carolina, Greensboro and my Bachelors of Music in Bassoon Performance from Sacramento State University. The bassoon is an amazing instrument! The nickname for the bassoon is the "clown of the orchestra". I am so excited to teach you more about the bassoon! I am an interactive teacher who can assist you in many ways in regards to learning how to play the bassoon including; correct posture, new breathing techniques, correct fingerings, alternative fingerings, half-hole technique, improved sight-reading skills, greater music theory knowledge, and performance skills. I graduated from New England Conservatory of Music with a degree in Classical Bassoon Performance and Contemporary Improvisation. I currently play as a freelance player and perform with local experimental ensembles in the Austin, TX area. Bassoon has been a passion and my primary means of expression for as long as I can remember. I want to help students achieve that same sense of accomplishment and direction I felt and continue to feel with the instrument.

I was classically trained for 11 years under bassoonists Mark Goldberg, Richard Svoboda, and Lori Tiberio. My Contemporary Improvisation studies were conducted with renowned improvisors Joe Morris and Anthony Coleman at the New England Conservatory of Music. As a graduate of NEC's Contemporary Improvisation Department, I can help students push the boundaries of their instrument, think outside the box, and utilize techniques not often found in the classical community.

I'm engaged with the process of teaching bassoon students from the beginner level up to the advanced level. I make sure to make them aware of the importance of proper cleaning and care for their bassoons. I'm a patient teacher and know that everyone learns differently and at different speeds. I like to play duets with the students to make the lessons fun. I'm knowledgeable about bassoon solo pieces and orchestral repertoire and am able to help to help students prepare for solo contests. I emphasize the development of technique through slow scales and gradually expand the range. I'm able to add a little humor in the lessons to make the lessons fun. I view myself as a student in the process of teaching, too. I'm also engaged with teaching students proper embouchure, breath support and talk to them about reeds and am able to teach them reed making and adjustment as they become more advanced.
