I can help you with conversation skills, correct pronunciation and proper grammar. I usually use a textbook called ‘Genki’ for my lessons. I provide the textbook so you don’t have to buy it. With ‘Genki’ we can work on various grammar points, vocabulary building, situational role playing, pronunciation, and plenty of exercises to improve your listening and speaking skills.

I try my best to keep the classes as relaxed as possible so that you can feel comfortable speaking and can learn at your own pace.

Hi everyone! My name is Miku. I was born in Hawaii and raised in Japan. I graduated from Dokkyo university in Saitama, Japan, and majored in hospitality and tourism. I was a former flight attendant for ANA (All Nippon Airways) living in Tokyo, Japan until I moved back to Hawaii in 2016. I’m now a

Mikuさん is awesome!! Extremely patient and helpful without holding my hand. I’m able to understand sentences better with less than a year of lessons. She’s very professional and prompt. The lessons are always interesting and I actually feel like I’m improving every time (even if it’s just a little at a time). I’m really looking forward to being more conversational in Japanese!!

I highly recommend Miku and have recommended her to several friends because lessons with her are extremely fun, engaging, and thorough. I look forward to every single one, and have already learned so much in what seems like a short time--the time flies! She is also incredibly accommodating and makes rescheduling very easy and hassle free. I very much appreciate the time she shares with me as a student in helping me learn the way I do!

Miku is a great teacher to work with! I've been doing weekly lessons with Miku remotely since December of 2019 (now July 2020 as I'm writing this) starting from no experience.  I was worried about my ability to learn a new language since my only experience prior to this was learning Spanish in school years ago, but learning to read and speak Japanese with Miku's guidance has been the right level of challenging and fun.  Miku is a great communicator, flexible, really knowledgeable, adds nuance to the lessons we move through, and also really just fun to talk to and learn from.

Maximize your Japanese learning with a native speaker with years of teaching experience!

I tailor my lessons to each student's learning style, her/his needs and goals. I use Genki 1 and 2 textbooks and workbooks with most of my beginner to intermediate level students, unless other textbooks and/or learning resources are requested.
During the lesson, my focus is generally on the grammar explanations and practice, as well as reading, and speaking practice. Homework is assigned after each lesson, and students are expected to work independently on vocabulary building, unless otherwise requested.
I encourage all of my students to contact me between lessons if they have any questions, and I will try to answer them within 24 hours.

I am currently accepting students ages 16 and up. I am looking forward to meeting you!

I cannot believe I haven’t written a review before this. I’ve been learning with Rie for almost two years now, and it’s been a wonderful experience. Homework is manageable on top of my classes and her teaching style reminds me of a classroom. I chose to study under Rie because I knew that she was someone whose teaching would hold me accountable to continue progressing. I can say happily that was a great choice and I could not have picked a better instructor.

I’ve been studying Japanese off and on for almost 20 years. I had reached an upper intermediate level but I wanted to take my ability to a higher level so I started looking for a Japanese tutor. I feel really lucky to have found Rie. She’s a cool person who’s fun to work with. She’s patient and flexible and she always explains things in a way that is easy to understand. She’s as invested in my Japanese learning as I am and it’s hard to place a value on that kind of support and partnership. She also has good textbooks for people at more advanced levels. Without a doubt, my Japanese has improved more in the time I’ve been working with Rie than it has at any other time in all the years I’ve been studying it. If you’re an intermediate or advanced learner of Japanese and you’re looking to improve, Rie can absolutely help you. I couldn’t recommend her more highly.

During my undergraduate studies, I worked as a president of SUNY Albany Japanese Student Association and also worked as a TA for Japanese 101 classes, and I absolutely love to teach languages! I understand it is often very hard to find a language tutor outside of the spoken community, and I hope to provide you with the opportunity to be exposed to authentic media sources to acquire natural fluency. Hope to hear from you soon!

About Hikaru

はじめまして & thank you for taking a moment to check out my profile! I'm originally from Tokyo Japan, and I moved to NY with my family during high school. I've completed Master's degrees in Language Education & Communication, and Bachelor's Degrees in Music Performance and Political Science.

I just had my second lesson with Hikaru and I ask so many questions all the time and am just a lot as a person, but she's so patient and is really willing to answer all of my questions and go over absolutely whatever. She's also very good at explaining things and can explain the grammar side to me (I'm a big grammar proponent), which is an absolute blessing. Lessons fly by and I absolutely cannot wait for my next one.

Also, she's been helping me find resources that I can use to work on my Japanese outside of lessons. I know that some people won't do that because they want you to buy more lessons, but Hikaru genuinely just wants to help me learn both the language and the culture.

"Excellent Native Japanese Teacher!
Yoshi sensei does a great job teaching the fundamentals of the Japanese language For those who are new to or relearning (like me) Japanese, his teaching style and focus is perfect. He teaches well rounded lessons; covering written, spoken, and reading aspects through Kanji, Katakana, and hiragana. On a personal level, he is friendly, patient, fun, kind person. In addition, I have learned so many new things like Japanese Calligraphy, Japanese tea ceremony, Origami, Japanese traditional healthy meals, Japanese culture, etiquettes, manners, I highly recommend him as a tutor."
