Aubrey is an exceptional teacher who goes above and beyond to bring out the best in your voice.

She also is great at getting you focused not only on how you sound but also on how you move and portray yourself on stage. I have taken lessons with several other teachers on Takelessons, and Aubrey has been the best with helping me perform overall, not just hit the notes.

She's also very flexible with scheduling and was always able to accommodate my busy schedule.

We are constantly play games to reinforce the techniques presented each week and the students always have fun. They walk away confident and wanting to learn more.

Spend time on costuming and set design, by creating with the materials we find at Goodwill, thrift stores and other retail businesses. We look over the characters descriptions and utilize our creative to flow with costuming and scenery.

In the past years we've done excerpts from The Polar Express, The Wizard of Oz, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and George and the Marvelous Medicine.

"Shauna Kanter is a remarkable teacher. While I've been taking classes with her for a year, I learned more from her in the first two months--about how to layer my performance as an actor, using both voice and body--than I did at a previous acting school where I was for almost two years. She provides tons of feedback on monologue and scene work, which is grounded in a vast knowledge of technique and her experience as a director and actor. I've experienced her guidance for scenes and monolgues from Three Sisters, Orpheus Descending, Closer, and an online reading called Covid Pages (on YouTube), among others. What I've learned has helped my performances tremendously. Shauna clearly loves what she does--seeing acting as both a craft and a community affirming art. Take lessons from her!"

Acting Tips: What's in your Toolbox?

As with any profession, actors have tools. Just as a doctor needs a stethoscope or a fireman needs a hose, there are certain items an actor must keep in their toolbox. I usually start classes or lessons by asking my new students or clients what they think these tools might be. Sometimes, the answer is very literal ("Script!"), and other times abstract ("Passion!"). None of these is a wrong answer. Being an actor or artist is subjective and everyone's process is different and valid. But t …

How to Read & Understand Stage Directions

If you’ve ever been in a play or musical you will be familiar with the term ‘stage directions’. For those who don’t know, stage directions are,  “an instruction in the text of a play, especially one indicating the movement, position, or tone of an actor.” Stage directions can also be instructions for the director, such as the way the stage should be lit or what kind of sound effect could be used.  Stage directions can also tell an actor how to deliver a line— pace of speech, emot …

4 Drama Games for Method Acting

If you’re interested in the wonderful world of acting, you’ll want to eventually familiarize yourself with the concept of method acting. But what is method acting exactly? It is an acting technique that allows the actor to associate with the character on an emotional level. This often involves the actor fully identifying with the character, feeling, expressing, and evoking thoughts and emotions that resonate with the character’s role. Essentially, the actor “becomes” the character. …
