Private Viola Teacher

I am a professional violinist and violist in the Boston area. I am a graduate of the New England Conservatory where I have studied with Miriam Fried, Donald Weilerstein, and Martha Katz. I have performed extensively throughout my life as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player on both the violin and viola in a variety of professional ensembles including substitute viola work with the Borromeo String Quartet. I draw from this performing background to teach my students of all ages and abilities.

I currently act as Adjunct Instructor of Violin and Viola at Merrimack College, where I serve as a primary instrumental teacher to enrolled students. I have also acted as the primary violin teacher for Main Street Music, LLC, in Waltham. Additionally, I run a private studio of approximately 20 students as young as 6 and as old as 60. Of these, some never touched an instrument before our first lesson, and some are serious conservatory-bound musicians intending to make a career as a ...

Viola:
A stringed instrument that is bowed or played with varying techniques. It is slightly larger than a violin and has a lower and deeper sound. Since the 18th century it has been the middle or alto voice of the violin family, between the violin (which is tuned a perfect fifth above) and the cello (which is tuned an octave below. The strings from low to high are generally tuned to C3, G3, D4, and A4. My lessons always start out with the basics! We start out by learning notes by plucking the strings and then the bow is soon incorporated. The goal is to eventually learn all the notes on the fretboard and also learning how to read and play chords. As the student progresses advanced techniques are introduced, music theory and learning how to solo.

Karen obviously loves the piano & guitar. She’s probably an excellent teacher for those instruments. Why do I say that? That’s what she talked about! She spent half my lesson trying to convince me to learn one of those instruments. Could work on listening skills! Not even sure if she owns a set of bongos herself. Didn’t start teaching me anything until last 10 min & then I had to leave early anyway. So 50 min out of 60 and about 5 I actually learned a few things I could have been practicing for at least 30 min of class. Use her if you want to learn something else other than bongos.

Ms. Karen did a pretty good job, she had ideas for the lesson and provided ideas for the next lesson. She went out of her way to help me with this new idea---------"music" and "reading music." If there was any short fall in the lesson it was on my side and my preparation failings. I have no problem recommending Ms. Karen to others. Regards, JC

Extremely knowledgeable! Karen is a superb guitar instructor. Honestly, I was struggling. Discouraged! She helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and moved me from beginner to intermediate in a matter of months. If you’re getting tired of learning from YouTube and smart phone apps, let Karen kick start your guitar playing. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks Karen!!

Intermediate - Expert Viola!

I shall guide you through your passage-work, intonation, vibrato, sliding, presence and solidity. I can also encourage musical intuition and imagination for creative students and teach them how to be independent thinkers. Therefore, I can tailor the student’s personal curriculum to achieve their greatest musicianship.

I teach Suzuki and Traditional methods with utmost observance and give great clarity on the student's progress.

I have performed as a classical soloist, in chamber groups, and with a full orchestra. Additionally, I have experience in modern popular music. I help my students understand their body, and the importance of both mental preparation, and the
knowledge of how to become completely comfortable during their practice time and their performance time.

I love being able to use my extensive world-wide experiences to galvanize the interests of my students. I have been fortunate to have lived in so many places, to have studied with the ...

I teach Viola Using the traditional Suzuki method. If you have played violin, the technique is much the same. Reading the C clef will be a new experience. Viola has a great rich sound and is a great solo instrument and a great ensemble instrument. Come and enjoy learning a wonderful musical instrument.

"Elisa is a great teacher

Elisa taught my daughter viola for almost two years before she moved West. My daughter start viola when she was six. Elisa was very good with a young novice player - She explained musical concepts at an age appropriate level (but never dumbed things down). We were also pleased that she had high standards in her weekly expectations but always kept things fun and loose so as not to cause stress. Had she not moved we would still be employing her. Elisa is a great teacher."

"Amanda is a fantastic teacher for a beginning violist of any age. Even on days that I am not motivated and don't really want to play she is able to brighten my day with her optimism, energy, and enthusiasm. She has an extraordinary ability to add confidence to a new and nervous student. My experience as a someone in their 30's has been absolutely wonderful with Amanda as my teacher."

"We have tried a few instructors for strings and they were not the right fit for us. We finally struck GOLD with Charles! Very professional, not at all condescending with his feedback (this was our problem with a couple others), taught my son things he has not learned in school in terms of correct form/placement of viola, and bow technique. We are very excited for the next lesson!"
