Practical, efficient, patient, supportive. Matthew is able to assess quickly and keep things progressing forward while still highlighting fundamentals. Great for adults. Gentle for those on the lower end of confidence with an instrument.

Matt taught me for a 3 month period and helped me drastically with learning how to improvise guitar solos. I can't thank Matt enough for his help in helping me with a rather unorthodox time to start getting lessons. Each week he told me to bring 3 songs with a guitar solo I would like to learn in different genres and each week we broke down the solos for me to practice and gather their techniques. Thank you so much Matt!

My 9 year old son had his first session yesterday, and he loved it. Matthew is great, responsive and especially patient! My son is looking forward to having more sessions!

I have been taking lessons with Cris for a few weeks now and they are going great! He is super professional and attentive to individual needs. He has really helped me figure out my own goals as a musician, and how to get there.

Cris is great so far... one lesson in and my son is looking forward to the next.

Only our first lesson, but my sometimes shy, sometimes easily frustrated 8 yo daughter responded very well to Chris and gave the lesson literally 2 thumbs up. Looking forward to see her learn how to play!

Guitar students start with five subjects.

1) Technique is concerned with the development of the physical mechanics involved in playing the instrument.

2) Scales are a part of basic music vocabulary and building blocks of the musical language.

3) Chords are also basic vocabulary of the musical language.

4) Note reading is not required for every student. It really depends on the students' goals. However, I strongly encourage everyone learn to read musical notation, (more than tablature). Literacy in reading music is analogous to literacy in reading in our English language. Can you imagine how much smaller our world would be if we couldn't read?

5) Songs utilize the skills and concepts of all the previously mentioned subjects and are the goal of studying music. The student chooses what songs they want to play, guided by my suggestions; Jazz, rock, blues, country, bluegrass, R &B - "How deep is the ocean, how high is the sky?"

A beginning student will practice all

Phil is a consummate musician and is extremely knowledgeable and patient. He helped me to arrange several songs and encouraged me to write my own arrangements, as that really helps one better understand the instrument. I loved our lessons on learning all the scales and modes, too.

Phillips teaching is very low key and suttle but very effective. I am astounded at how much he has taught me in a few weeks.

Through private instruction I seek to find the best ways of communicating with my students. My approach is based in the belief that each student has his/her own unique preferred communication style. Getting to really know our students, learning what their goals are, understanding their preferred communication style, and understanding how they best understand concepts. All of these things I work to try know because I feel it helps me be more successful as a teacher

About Jason

I grew up in Berea, Ohio and have been playing the guitar since age 14. I have a degree with a major in music from Cleveland State. I have been teaching the guitar on and off for 20 years. At CSU I got the opportunity to study with Cleveland jazz guitarist Bob Fraser. I also took classes in music ed

Jason is a true master of his craft, and an excellent teacher as well. I took guitar lessons with Jason from the time I was 12 until I was 18, and he developed me into the guitar player I am today. I have played lead guitar in multiple bands over the years since, recorded in professional studios, and have played shows all over the state of Ohio. Regardless of the situation, however, I still find myself leaning on the core concepts and unique styles that Jason taught me. He doesn't just pull inspiration from one genre, but empowers his students to blend aspects of all music together in pursuit of their own artistic expression. He also does a great job of developing newer guitar players by first establishing a strong base of knowledge, and then encouraging them to find their own sound. Jason brings the energy of the all time greats such as Jimmy Page and Eddie Van Halen; when you hear him play guitar, you can't help but listen. When combined with his strong talent for teaching and relating to others, the result is quite impressive. Whether you're a first time player looking to get started, or a seasoned professional looking to bounce ideas around, you can't go wrong with Jason Livengood!

I went through 4 voice teachers here in NYC before settling on Mary - been taking vocal training with her for about a year and half now and it's been worth every penny.

Mary is an excellent communicator, with a great sense for analogies and concrete descriptions for abstract concepts (esp crucial for things like singing). She's a gifted vocalist, having been classically trained with an Opera and Jazz background, but more than that - she has the ability to enhance someone else's sense of style and natural voice. She is of course also an amazing human all around, with a great attitude, style, and general "lust for life." Highly recommend Mary as a vocal coach

My decades long musical history was moving toward something new - singer-songwriter-guitar performer. I needed help. Mary is shockingly amazing in all three, which says nothing for her piano and tech skills, which says nothing for her really beautiful ear and professional easy demeanor ... I can't recommend her enough. She has transformed a part of my musical world into something, for which I am both eternally grateful and waiting for my next lesson.
jon R.
I began taking lessons with Mary after I heard her sing. Besides having a terrific voice I really love how effortless she makes singing look. I've been taking lessons with her for about a month and she's been helping me connect the dots. I appreciate her method. She works with me to build my voice and doesn't push a style or direction. Her descriptions give me directions on what to think and how to feel when I sing. I look forward to the coming months!

"Eric is a overall great instructor and taught me the basics in a two hour class.

Eric is amazing! He taught me to play the basic cords; proper handling including how to hold a pick, how to stand and sit with the guitar, how to place your fingers on the strings, and how to pick your strings. I learned all of these things in a two hour class. Overall, I think he is a great instructor for beginners, private, and group lessons. :D

Gene is a great instructor. He is very kind and attentive. I'm a beginner and I do mean beginner. But Gene takes time and let's me know that I can accomplish playing regardless of my age. I'm an old hippy! So learning songs like "Imagine" and "Knocking on Heavens Door" is right up my alley! I look forward to my classes! Here comes the 54 year old hippy with guitar on her hip!!! "Steve is a great teacher. I had some small working knowledge after trying to teach myself for a year without any luck and with Steve's help I've learned a lot and can play a couple of songs! He really listens to you and what your interests are and focuses on those rather than the traditional method of going through the basics and earning things we have no interest in like we all did in band class in school. Of course if that's what you need he will, but in all its focused on you and what you need to progress yourself as a musician. He is also very easy to work with in terms of making and changing schedules. If you have a hectic and ever changing life like myself it's no problem for Steve to work around. I would highly recommend him to anyone interested in taking their guitar playing to the next level."

I'm sure he is equally effective with any age level, but I know he is superb at teaching adult students. His approach to teaching makes it clear that he has a " roadmap" to learning the guitar that is much more effective and rewarding than just learning random chords.
