I am a professional violinist and violist in the Boston area. I am a graduate of the New England Conservatory where I have studied with Miriam Fried, Donald Weilerstein, and Martha Katz. I have performed extensively throughout my life as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player on both the violin and viola in a variety of professional ensembles including substitute viola work with the Borromeo String Quartet. I draw from this performing background to teach my students of all ages and abilities.

I currently act as Adjunct Instructor of Violin and Viola at Merrimack College, where I serve as a primary instrumental teacher to enrolled students. I have also acted as the primary violin teacher for Main Street Music, LLC, in Waltham. Additionally, I run a private studio of approximately 20 students as young as 6 and as old as 60. Of these, some never touched an instrument before our first lesson, and some are serious conservatory-bound musicians intending to make a career as a ...

Viola:
A stringed instrument that is bowed or played with varying techniques. It is slightly larger than a violin and has a lower and deeper sound. Since the 18th century it has been the middle or alto voice of the violin family, between the violin (which is tuned a perfect fifth above) and the cello (which is tuned an octave below. The strings from low to high are generally tuned to C3, G3, D4, and A4. My lessons always start out with the basics! We start out by learning notes by plucking the strings and then the bow is soon incorporated. The goal is to eventually learn all the notes on the fretboard and also learning how to read and play chords. As the student progresses advanced techniques are introduced, music theory and learning how to solo.

Karen obviously loves the piano & guitar. She’s probably an excellent teacher for those instruments. Why do I say that? That’s what she talked about! She spent half my lesson trying to convince me to learn one of those instruments. Could work on listening skills! Not even sure if she owns a set of bongos herself. Didn’t start teaching me anything until last 10 min & then I had to leave early anyway. So 50 min out of 60 and about 5 I actually learned a few things I could have been practicing for at least 30 min of class. Use her if you want to learn something else other than bongos.

Ms. Karen did a pretty good job, she had ideas for the lesson and provided ideas for the next lesson. She went out of her way to help me with this new idea---------"music" and "reading music." If there was any short fall in the lesson it was on my side and my preparation failings. I have no problem recommending Ms. Karen to others. Regards, JC

Extremely knowledgeable! Karen is a superb guitar instructor. Honestly, I was struggling. Discouraged! She helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and moved me from beginner to intermediate in a matter of months. If you’re getting tired of learning from YouTube and smart phone apps, let Karen kick start your guitar playing. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks Karen!!

Musicking is meant for everyone - let's get started! My name is Christina Sack. I'm a 4th-year student of Music Education at the University of Connecticut. I love to give violin lessons that are completely personalized to YOU. Regardless of whether you are a complete beginner, would like tips on a specific technique, need a mock audition judge, want to improve your ear, you name it - I'm excited to meet you where you are at and point you in the right direction for success.

Fundamental to playing any genre of music is a firm foundation in technique. Students can expect to receive positive and constructive feedback about their performance in each lesson, along with demonstrations and practical suggestions for further practice. If you have a particular method of study that you wish to pursue or a book that you would like to use (Suzuki, Essential Elements, O'Connor, etc), I'm glad to work with you within your method of choice. If you don't have one, that's also fine - I'm happy to ...

I have put my daughter in singing classes with many different teachers but none were as spectacular as Mary. She is in love with these classes and all the technique being taught in them, and I've noticed a lot of progress in her singing plus confidence in her ability. I sadly cannot afford any more classes but recommend Mary whole-heartedly to anyone that really wants to advance as a singer and have serious improvement.

She had many tips and tricks to help my daughter learn. My daughter left the lesson eager to practice what she learned, and eager to go to her next lesson. I couldn’t ask for a better outcome!

"My 13 year old granddaughter just finished her 1st year of viola at school in June 2014 and she wanted to take summer lessons to stay sharp. There were a lot of teachers available within a 10-15 minute drive, but after trying other teachers, we chose Mark (a 30 minute drive ) because, as others have commented, he is extremely patient and teaches by correcting, not criticizing. He simply has a gift for teaching. I have never regretted the extra drive. Once you've had a lesson with him, you won't want to go to anyone else."

"Zachary is astute, professional, clear in communication, and a compassionate and effective teacher. I have had violin, cello, and viola instructors for my children for 15 years, and Zachary is among the best. There are a few things you look for in an instructor:
1. That they make an honest assessment.
2. That they make a plan, communicate it to the student, and stick to it.
3. That they work with what the student brings to the lesson in terms of skill.

Zachary took my daughter in quickly, was able to assess where she was and put together an effective plan for her. I noticed the improvement immediately and my daughter was inspired to practice.

Highly recommended."
