Private Viola Teacher

I am a professional violinist and violist in the Boston area. I am a graduate of the New England Conservatory where I have studied with Miriam Fried, Donald Weilerstein, and Martha Katz. I have performed extensively throughout my life as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player on both the violin and viola in a variety of professional ensembles including substitute viola work with the Borromeo String Quartet. I draw from this performing background to teach my students of all ages and abilities.

I currently act as Adjunct Instructor of Violin and Viola at Merrimack College, where I serve as a primary instrumental teacher to enrolled students. I have also acted as the primary violin teacher for Main Street Music, LLC, in Waltham. Additionally, I run a private studio of approximately 20 students as young as 6 and as old as 60. Of these, some never touched an instrument before our first lesson, and some are serious conservatory-bound musicians intending to make a career as a ...

Viola:
A stringed instrument that is bowed or played with varying techniques. It is slightly larger than a violin and has a lower and deeper sound. Since the 18th century it has been the middle or alto voice of the violin family, between the violin (which is tuned a perfect fifth above) and the cello (which is tuned an octave below. The strings from low to high are generally tuned to C3, G3, D4, and A4. My lessons always start out with the basics! We start out by learning notes by plucking the strings and then the bow is soon incorporated. The goal is to eventually learn all the notes on the fretboard and also learning how to read and play chords. As the student progresses advanced techniques are introduced, music theory and learning how to solo.

Karen obviously loves the piano & guitar. She’s probably an excellent teacher for those instruments. Why do I say that? That’s what she talked about! She spent half my lesson trying to convince me to learn one of those instruments. Could work on listening skills! Not even sure if she owns a set of bongos herself. Didn’t start teaching me anything until last 10 min & then I had to leave early anyway. So 50 min out of 60 and about 5 I actually learned a few things I could have been practicing for at least 30 min of class. Use her if you want to learn something else other than bongos.

Ms. Karen did a pretty good job, she had ideas for the lesson and provided ideas for the next lesson. She went out of her way to help me with this new idea---------"music" and "reading music." If there was any short fall in the lesson it was on my side and my preparation failings. I have no problem recommending Ms. Karen to others. Regards, JC

Extremely knowledgeable! Karen is a superb guitar instructor. Honestly, I was struggling. Discouraged! She helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and moved me from beginner to intermediate in a matter of months. If you’re getting tired of learning from YouTube and smart phone apps, let Karen kick start your guitar playing. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks Karen!!

Katie was exceptionally patient and encouraging with my five year old daughter. She was a major asset in teaching my daughter the basics of violin - including proper stance and note formation. I could not recommend her enough.
Michele
Katie was a wonderful violin teacher for my son (four years old at the time). Katie knew how to make learning music and the violin fun through games and various activities. She was attentive and patient, kind and encouraging. She worked with us to allow him to participate in the annual recital--she played a simple, beautiful song while he plucked an open string. She is reliable, accessible, and caring. Couldn't ask for a better, more qualified, and dynamic teacher than Katie to facilitate a positive musical experience a young child.
Michelle
I greatly enjoyed my violin lessons with Katie. She improved my violin technique, encouraged me to tackle challenging solo pieces, and helped me prepare for youth orchestra auditions. She also guided me in producing video recordings for my college applications. On top of that, she is extremely patient and cheerful. Katie is the best!

My training in viola comes from distinguished performers and educators in the classical music community. I have studied with Lawrence Dutton (of the Emerson String Quartet), Nicholas Cords (of Brooklyn Rider), Karen Ritscher (of Manhattan School of Music), and Nancy Buck (of Arizona State University). My teachers have been taught by some of the most eminent string pedagogues of their generation, including Dorothy Delay, Karen Tuttle, Lilian Fuchs, Harvey Shapiro, and Heidi Castleman. This broad survey of teaching styles and philosophies gives me a great breadth of knowledge which I apply to each student.

I have been teaching for over a decade in many settings. These include: my own private studio, TakeLessons, music stores, performing arts studios, and at the university level.

Before earning my masters degree in performance, I was honored to be awarded a Teaching Assistantship for the viola studio of Professor Nancy Buck at Arizona State University. During my teaching appointment,

Love taking lessons with Sarah. She encourages me by pointing out what I do right (positive reinforcement) and also corrects me if I didn't quite master something yet. Perfect lessons. She definitely respects the time and gets to the lessons right away. I enjoy the practices and tips you gave me when I have never been a fan of "practices" prior to taking classes with you. Thanks, Sarah.

I love learning from Sarah as an adult student! She is so patient and kind, and explains things in multiple ways if I am confused. I definitely recommend her for any student!

It was a very welcoming approach to the Violin world my daughter felt on her 1st lesson. Sarah was so patient, soft spoken and well versed with her violin skills that made the class worthwhile.

The viola is a beautiful instrument and many violin students opt to switch to viola. I enjoy helping a new viola player learn the clef, start exercises, scales and pieces for the viola. It is a very important instrument in the orchestra and in small ensembles like a string quartet. Most school programs welcome violists with open arms. You will enjoy the lovely sound of a viola while learning the beautiful music written for it.

"Elisa is a great teacher

Elisa taught my daughter viola for almost two years before she moved West. My daughter start viola when she was six. Elisa was very good with a young novice player - She explained musical concepts at an age appropriate level (but never dumbed things down). We were also pleased that she had high standards in her weekly expectations but always kept things fun and loose so as not to cause stress. Had she not moved we would still be employing her. Elisa is a great teacher."
