I am a professional artist with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting, and works that have been displayed at the MoMa in New York, the Museum of African American Culture in Houston, TIME Magazine, and more. My drawing lessons will be specifically tailored to you and your personal goals, while also maintaining a flexible structure. I find most art teaching to be much too limiting, and while our lessons will go over traditional techniques, we will also be finding your personal style and strengths. We will uncover the importance of line weight, learn how to shade, learn how to draw from life, learn how to draw hyper-realistically, and much more. In addition, we will go over helpful physical tools that i've found instantly make me a better artist. I believe everyone has the ability to be an amazing draftsman, and just needs the proper instructing.

About John

Hello! I am a professional artist who has exhibited in many galleries and museums, publications and more all over the country. I have received both the Pullock-Krasner grant and the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant for my artistic ability. My work includes drawing, painting, printmaking, a

John is an amazing teacher! Before our session john laid out a lesson plan catered to my needs. When we hopped into the zoom meeting the setting was very comfortable and open. I had many mind-blowing moments during our lesson where john taught me techniques I’ve never seen before (trust i’ve done a lot of digging on youtube). I left the lesson feeling instantly inspired and ready to practice what I learned. 10000000% worth it and I will be coming back for another lesson.

ps. even went over our time to make sure I grasped a technique + recorded and was sent our session. Very thoughtful instructor.

*** for anyone looking for painting based drawing lessons... this is the instructor for you.

Omg! John is beyond what I had expected in painting lessons! Very clear, thorough and extremely patient!!! Encouraging and inspiring!!! He has a way of showing me colors and values that literally blew my mind. I’ve had only a few lessons with him and I asked my boyfriend to please buy me more for my holiday gift. He is way underpriced for the artistic and instructional skill level he has! Has such an aura of humility that makes me not be intimidated and I’m comfortable to ask questions without fear of embarrassment. I look forward to many more lessons from him. I highly highly highly recommend John!!!
Tim
I am a relatively experienced artist but John has given eye opening instruction in just our two sessions already. I left both lessons feeling like I had a months worth of schooling, and it was stress free. Highly Recommended!

Self expression through art is an amazing experience. It's personal on all levels.

The most fabulous thing about being an artist is that boundaries regarding creativity are non-existent. The artist is always in a state of learning. Art is a progressive practice that takes time to develop. The students main objective is to learn, by drawing what the individual wishes to draw (personal projects that sparks and continues the creativity within).

Materials are not included.
Materials needed are pencil, paper and a willingness to explore.

Drawing lessons will be assessed based on the individual's current abilities and their goals.
Ages 9+

Note:
For virtual sessions, the student will need to create a conducive workspace that will allow teacher/student viewing of art work in progress. The student will need a workspace with lots of light. Often, I will ask to see the students progress, so that I may be able critique and give advise on their work in progress.

For short-term sessions ...

The ability to capture an image on paper—whether it’s something you see with your eye or with your imagination—is among the most powerful communication and expression tools humans possess. We’ve done it for thousands of years and its scientific benefits to the brain are just starting to be recognized.

We’ll explore basic techniques like sketching, outlining, shading, perspective, and tool use. We’ll apply those to enriching your experience in everyday life and sharing your personal viewpoint on the world.

Whether you’re capturing a bird in flight, a cartoon character from TV, a fantastical creature from your dreams, or detailed renderings of your dream house, my 30 years of experience and training will elevate you to the next level of proficiency and sensitivity.

About Isaac

CUSTOM-MADE FOR YOU Learning involves playfulness, curiosity, and personal connection. I've studied how people learn and how people play, along with 25 years of professional and performance experience, and I focus it entirely on you. We start with what you love, discover what you already know, then

Isaac helped to distinguish the difference between creating art and copying which tapped a different side of drawing for me. Had a good session on training on seeing the tones of shades.

Art is fun and relaxing, and that's exactly how I like to teach. Whether you're a beginner, aspiring artist, or someone who's always wanted to draw, I can help you create the portfolio of your dreams. I have watched my students grow from beginners to creating some incredible works.

I specialize drawing realistically in graphite, charcoal, and pen. For beginners, I always go over the basics: shapes, shading, and strokes. We will start with simple objects such as cups and boxes, and move on to more advanced subjects, leading to your goals as an artist. I can teach how to draw from life, photo, or even from your imagination.

About Dennis

Ruth was amazingly helpful. She was clear knowledgeable and a great communicator. She was able to solve all my issues and answer all my questions. I highly recommend her as a teacher for illustration
Claire
My 1st animation lesson with Ruthie was a BLAST! She had me share my project ideas in writing before we met so she had a sense of what I wanted to work on, and helped me clarify my vision. Even though I’m a beginner at animation, Ruthie used her expertise and wonderful teaching style to help me learn some basic skills with a new program so that I can try things on my own. I can’t wait for my next lesson! Thank you Ruthie!
