I have been playing and teaching banjo since 2006, and I'm always very excited to introduce new students to this unique instrument. I focus on the "Scruggs-style" method of playing 5-string banjo, and we'll work on techniques used in common bluegrass and folk tunes. Bachelors in Music Education from Shenandoah University & Conservatory
Teaching since 1998
I begin by focusing on the basics of the flute, such as knowing the parts of the flute, how to hold the flute with good posture, making that first sound, having the correct embouchure, and some breathing techniques. Then we progress to learning basic note-reading and rhythms, while incorporating several beginner flute fingerings, then moving on to learning simple songs.
I typically use the Accent on Achievement series for flute or the Rubank flute series or a combination of the two, depending on the student's ability/level.
If the student plays in band at school, we may also take time to work on music for that as well, giving the student the individual attention that they may miss in a group/classroom setting. Flute lessons are also a great way to keep up with practice when school is out for holiday breaks or summer.
I have been teaching music for 23 years, both in private lesson and classroom settings. I have a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Shenandoah University & Conservatory and I have experience teaching all age groups, from age 3 through senior adults, and every age in between. I enjoy teaching

It's one thing to experience stage fright. But imagine being up on stage, trying to hold your violin steady and place your bow correctly, when your arm is shaking like a leaf during the fiercest Chicago winds. The mind is a powerful thing, and the physical effects that nerves can have on the body are sometimes overwhelming. Let one negative thought slip, and you might find your heart racing, your palms sweating, and your shoulders tensing - none of which are good for your playing. So how …
