My approach in teaching is firmly grounded in developing a healthy and self-driven practice culture in my students. As a practicing teacher, I strive tirelessly to lead by example. I ensure my students feel empowered after each lesson and hold them accountable to commit to their own daily grinds. For working with a new student, my typical process is to begin with the end in mind. According to the particular needs and expectations of the student, we discuss attainable and measurable goals for a given period of time. Especially during times of difficulty, I encourage my students to follow their curiosity and guard their motivation as we share the journey of music making together.

About Tommy

As a strong believer in the life-changing power of music, my teaching is driven by my purpose to serve and empower students of all backgrounds to realize their full potential and to leave a positive impact on the lives of others. During the last 6 months, Tommy has been a wonderfully patient, kind, and knowledgeable teacher to my 12 year-old son. He focused on my son's particular needs and provided lessons he put together to focus on areas to improve his skills. Moreover, Tommy is a talented musician, with the skill and experience to teach any level of trombone. I am very glad I chose Tommy to mentor my son in trombone.

During my time with Tommy, he has helped me improve in many areas. I feel that I learn and improve every lesson. Tommy is committed to teaching and points things out where I can improve upon. While teaching, Tommy uses many analogies that help me better understand what I'm doing wrong and how I can fix it.

Trombone:
A musical instrument in the brass family where sound is produced when the player's vibrating lips (embouchure) cause the air column inside the instrument to vibrate. Nearly all trombones have a telescoping slide mechanism that varies the length of the instrument to change the pitch. I will start with the basics. Proper breathing, reading, notes, rhythms, songs, theory, and improvisation.

About Karen

Karen obviously loves the piano & guitar. She’s probably an excellent teacher for those instruments. Why do I say that? That’s what she talked about! She spent half my lesson trying to convince me to learn one of those instruments. Could work on listening skills! Not even sure if she owns a set of bongos herself. Didn’t start teaching me anything until last 10 min & then I had to leave early anyway. So 50 min out of 60 and about 5 I actually learned a few things I could have been practicing for at least 30 min of class. Use her if you want to learn something else other than bongos.

Ms. Karen did a pretty good job, she had ideas for the lesson and provided ideas for the next lesson. She went out of her way to help me with this new idea---------"music" and "reading music." If there was any short fall in the lesson it was on my side and my preparation failings. I have no problem recommending Ms. Karen to others. Regards, JC

Extremely knowledgeable! Karen is a superb guitar instructor. Honestly, I was struggling. Discouraged! She helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and moved me from beginner to intermediate in a matter of months. If you’re getting tired of learning from YouTube and smart phone apps, let Karen kick start your guitar playing. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks Karen!!

Over my 20 years of playing trumpet professionally, I have picked up enough trombone to offer quite a lot to trombone students! I believe the fundamentals of all great brass playing are the same, and I can get you off to a fantastic start if you are a beginner or intermediate player :).

About Caleb

Caleb moved from his hometown of Wichita, Kansas, to Chicago in 2008 to attend DePaul University, where he received his Bachelor’s in Trumpet Performance studying under Matt Lee and Tage Larsen. Since then, Caleb has picked up a variety of regular gigs across a wide spectrum of styles, genres, and

I had played the trumpet in high school but had not played it since then for 40 years. I was wanting to get back into it to play some specific songs with some friends that play drums, guitars etc. Caleb was the perfect match to teach me the basics again, some music theory and then helping me learn and play the songs I wanted to play. He is so great to work with and will take you in any direction you want to go. And, he is so awesome playing the trumpet. He's amazing. He knows what he is talking about and can back it up. I highly recommend him to anyone at any level.

Caleb is an excellent teacher! He was patient and encouraging with my teenage son who can sometimes get very discouraged when he finds his work challenging. I hope some of Caleb's positive attitude rubs off on him. The improvement in my son's trombone playing after one lesson was impressive..

I have over twenty years' experience teaching private lessons on trombone (alto, tenor, and bass), euphonium, and tuba. I perform regularly with symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, and popular groups in my area, and have performed, conducted, and lectured at the International Trombone Festival, the International Tuba-Euphonium Conference, and other major venues. While most of my teaching is at the university level, I also work regularly with students both younger and older than that. My high school students are frequently successful in auditions for all-state ensembles, college scholarships, and competitions. My focus in lessons is to help each student to develop sound fundamental playing skills and then teach students how to apply those to realizing musical goals.

Taking lessons with Dr. E has significantly improved both my skill with my instrument as well as my approach to music as a whole. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for low brass lessons.

Dr. Everett is a master musician who is able to articulate his skills and techniques effectively. We have two young musicians (high school) who have greatly benefited directly from Dr. Everett's private lessons as well as from personal instruction from (2) former students. Dr. Everett gets results!

Trombone is a huge passion of mine. As a reformed woodwind player, I feel in love with the sound of the trombone in high school and never looked back! I love to get nerdy about brass pedagogy and technique. Ear training is incredibly important for a trombonist, and I use a structured approach for all of my students to gradually increase this skill. I use jazz standards to teach my students how to improvise if they're open to it. I am also a singer and I have found that breathing techniques I've learned from singing has helped me to teach my trombone students.

"I played the trombone when I was a kid but lost interest back then. After not playing for about 15 years Billy helped me to get back to it. We covered reading notes, learning a little bit about music theory (keys etc) and of course playing. I wanted to practice with some songs I like and Billy was able to write the notes down for me. This was super helpful and really made me enjoy playing the trombone again! We practiced in a room in the New School, which was cool since I could play as loud as I wanted, compared to back at home where I usually use a mute. He was very patient and friendly and I can highly recommend him as a teacher."
