Mandolin:
An instrument in the lute family that is usually plucked with a pick or with fingers. Mostly used in folk music it is very versatile for all types of music. I have many teaching techniques. I could teach a student just to strum or pick to songs, or teach you the basics of notes, chords, theory, rhythm and soloing. How ever you like to learn I will be there for you.

About Karen

Hi! My name is Karen D. I’ve had the pleasure of performing, singing, writing, and recording since I was seven years old. Besides being an Honor Graduate of Berklee School of Music, I have been a lifelong student of the international world-renowned instructors Dante Pavone and Charlie Banacos.

Karen obviously loves the piano & guitar. She’s probably an excellent teacher for those instruments. Why do I say that? That’s what she talked about! She spent half my lesson trying to convince me to learn one of those instruments. Could work on listening skills! Not even sure if she owns a set of bongos herself. Didn’t start teaching me anything until last 10 min & then I had to leave early anyway. So 50 min out of 60 and about 5 I actually learned a few things I could have been practicing for at least 30 min of class. Use her if you want to learn something else other than bongos.

Ms. Karen did a pretty good job, she had ideas for the lesson and provided ideas for the next lesson. She went out of her way to help me with this new idea---------"music" and "reading music." If there was any short fall in the lesson it was on my side and my preparation failings. I have no problem recommending Ms. Karen to others. Regards, JC

Extremely knowledgeable! Karen is a superb guitar instructor. Honestly, I was struggling. Discouraged! She helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and moved me from beginner to intermediate in a matter of months. If you’re getting tired of learning from YouTube and smart phone apps, let Karen kick start your guitar playing. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks Karen!!

I teach Mandolin using the Suzuki method and then branch out into into bluegrass mandolin playing. The mandolin is tuned like a violin double strings. So the left hand fingering is the same as the violin and the picking is similar to the guitar. If you play the violin then the main thing you need to learn is the right hand picking. If you play the guitar then you will need to learn the left hand fingering. Mandolin is a fun instrument to learn and to play.

I have been teaching music for over fifty years. I have taught many professional teachers and students over the years. I have played professionally in Many Classical and Jazz groups. My quick start method gets beginners playing music right away. I studied classical violin from Don Samuleson, Profe

Have you ever wanted to play the mandolin, but never knew where to start? Do you have trouble learning correct technique, practice strategies, or struggle finding good repertoire to learn? Well, you've come to the right place!

I am a young and passionate teacher, committed to helping you improve on your instrument and achieve your goals! Many students comment on my patience, communication skills, and flexibility as a teacher.

In our first lesson, I will likely ask you to demonstrate your level to me, either by telling me or showing me what you know. I will use this to better understand your strengths and weaknesses and go from there. You can expect to come away from our first lesson with some learning materials, a plan for going forward, and an encouraging start to our journey as musicians together!

Some examples of things students can learn from me include: expanding repertoire, ear training, music reading, improvising, jamming, music theory, and technique.

About Alani

I am a multi-instrumentalist with a passion for bluegrass and old time music. I have been studying music since the age of 9, and fell in love with traditional music when I was 13. I love to perform and have had the opportunity to share the stage with many of my hero's. My interest in teaching sta

Mandolin has become a more popular style of playing lately and not just used in Bluegrass. It is a great instrument to play for the folk sound of today.

Scott is awesome! Super knowledgeable in so many instruments, and he works with you to help you learn what you are interested in and establish a strong foundation to be able to grow as a musician. Lessons are always enjoyable, and I appreciate the time and effort he puts in to create tailored, individualized lessons. He has been my teacher for both mandolin and classical guitar. I would highly recommend lessons with Scott!

I appreciate Scott's relaxed style. He is able to make a realistic practice schedule for me to fit in to my work week. It is obvious he is very knowledgeable and has given me a lot of good tips so far. I would definitely recommend Scott.

I took weekly electric guitar lessons with Scott from 2004 to 2012. He is without a doubt an extremely talented, enthusiastic, and compassionate teacher. Whether he was helping me learn basic chords or teaching me complicated songs, Scott never wavered in his dedication to teaching. Over the eight years as his student, Scott gave constructive criticism in a courteous manner. He was on time, inquisitive about the songs and music I was listening to, and ended lesson with new material for me to practice. I wholeheartedly recommend Scott to any aspiring guitar student.

"I am currently working with Alani on the mandolin and I have already learned so much. Alani is has been very patient with my limited understanding of music and incredibly encouraging. I chose to work with Alani because she identified in her profile that she enjoys playing and teaching old-time and bluegrass. She has been helping me learn to play by ear so I can eventually contribute to some campfire jams when I am back in my home state of Maine! She always sets me up with a task and/or lesson to practice on my own. The lessons include a Youtube video that allows me to follow along and listen as I learn. In all, she is incredibly knowledgeable, talented, kind, and a great communicator. I have already recommended her to two friends who are looking to get into playing."

"I "shopped around" for a great teacher on this site.

For many new lesson takers, not only do you have no clue about your instrument, you aren't even sure what makes a great teacher!

So here are some things to look out for in a first lesson:

Your teacher should be personable and interested in your musical experience and taste. Ask them what they like! You might hear something you want to learn.

If you mention some level of experience, they will ask you to play something you either know or have been working on. This is important!

Then, preferably, they will ask why you have chosen your instrument and what you want to be able to do with it (i.e. do you want to play in a band, or just play your favorite songs for your family gatherings).

All of this allows you to relax and not worry too much about performing too much during your first lesson.

More importantly, it gives the instructor a clear path on how to work with YOU. The more they know about your current level, the better your experience and learning progress will be.

For absolute beginners, I would hope that they have a simple melody for you to learn right then and there by watching and playing with them.

Well, Justin knocked it out of the park! And then some.

He showed that he is willing to customize teaching to your style, as well.

I learn by ear, so he knew how to use that as an advantage for learning the fretboard and notes. Instead of giving me a paper with chords on it, he challenged me to use my knowledge and play around more thoughtfully to figure out what the names are for notes and chords I'm already playing.

Please, don't hesitate to work with Justin. The price is beyond fair! Especially since other teachers in the same price ranges are between 2-4 stars.

Thanks, Justin!"
