I earned MM in Jazz Performance, Bass Guitar Major, in 1993, and play/teach lessons for Bass Guitar since that time. My prospective students will receive rigorous training in both Bass Guitar performance and musicianship focused on the specifics of the subject of study. The level that we would begin lessons with will depend on the student's abilities and potentials. We will strive to create professional and friendly working atmosphere, and will begin lessons with careful assessment of the student's performing abilities; we will also set our goals, based on both individual expectations of students and on professional experience of the instructor. My teaching philosophy lies on three aspects; on patience with people; on love for the subject of teaching/study; and on rigorous training, offered to people, for their benefit and general musical development.

Bass Guitar:
Also called Electric Bass puts down the foundation in the band or orchestra. Besides learning notes, chords, finger exercise and theory the student will also learn how to play with a pick or their fingers and incorporate plucking, slapping, popping, and strumming techniques.

About Karen

Karen obviously loves the piano & guitar. She’s probably an excellent teacher for those instruments. Why do I say that? That’s what she talked about! She spent half my lesson trying to convince me to learn one of those instruments. Could work on listening skills! Not even sure if she owns a set of bongos herself. Didn’t start teaching me anything until last 10 min & then I had to leave early anyway. So 50 min out of 60 and about 5 I actually learned a few things I could have been practicing for at least 30 min of class. Use her if you want to learn something else other than bongos.

Ms. Karen did a pretty good job, she had ideas for the lesson and provided ideas for the next lesson. She went out of her way to help me with this new idea---------"music" and "reading music." If there was any short fall in the lesson it was on my side and my preparation failings. I have no problem recommending Ms. Karen to others. Regards, JC

Extremely knowledgeable! Karen is a superb guitar instructor. Honestly, I was struggling. Discouraged! She helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and moved me from beginner to intermediate in a matter of months. If you’re getting tired of learning from YouTube and smart phone apps, let Karen kick start your guitar playing. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks Karen!!

I meet you where you are at as a student and go from there. I like to teach methodically, building on new skills each lesson as building blocks towards bigger goals. I assign brief, targeted technical exercises as a venue to work on foundational technical skills, and incorporate these skills as much as possible into musical application. The ultimate goal is to play music and have fun, so technical practice will always be in service of playing the music you want to play. We will look at theory concepts when relevant. I will also incorporate my perspectives on tone, style, ensemble skills, practice skills, and real-world gigging.

I tailor lesson plans based on your musical background, if any, and your goals. I think of lessons as collaborative, working together to figure out what works best for you. I studied academically, and I also grew up playing in punk bands in basements, so I can offer advice and exercises from multiple perspectives. I use both approaches to music fluidly in ...

I've been taking lessons with David for more than 2 years, he's amazing... he's very knowledgeable, patient, knows how to explain difficult concepts and can adapt to a broad range of topics, covering different areas that I'm interested on, including music theory, songwriting, guitar and bass, and music production.

David is both a professional musician and an experienced instructor, and you can tell the difference that makes in every class.

We started with at-home classes, but switched to online during the pandemic and that's working pretty good for me to.

I'd recommend David to anyone looking to learn a new instrument, get better at it or expand their music knowledge in general.

Simply put, David is a great teacher. His lessons incorporated the perfect blend of theory and patience while opening up new horizons on the fret board. His style of teaching is very flexible so that one can hone in on what excites them. For me, that was jazz and David made a huge difference in my creativity.
Selina
David did a wonderful job, teaching me bass via Zoom with a lot of focus on what I wanted to do. Even though my interests ranged from technical to classical to theoretical to funk, he always had something he could show me and proved to have great knowledge of the instrument as well as of music theory and history. I would recommend him to anyone.

The bass guitar is first and foremost a melodic instrument, so I'm prepared to have you learning the basics so you can get started playing whatever style you enjoy the most. I'll especially help with all the hardware that playing an electric instrument comes with. I choose music with my students so the music they're playing is both fun and educational.

Each lesson is designed on the level of the student's ability from beginner to advanced. Rock, R&B, funk, jazz, blues, POP and country music. I like to use song learning as a vehicle to sharpen your skills. Learning skills through songs is more fun for beginners. More advanced students will work on everything from theory, reading, harmony; and how you can use scales and arpeggios in a number of ways over several different styles of music.

He is good!!!
I can play the very basic when I started but still need someone to help me to put everything together. He can diagnosis my level and design the learning plan for me when we first met. Lesson is fun and he always got something new/interesting to for students to work and practice.

Incredible and knowledgeable guitar instructor!

I just realized how important to have a teacher right in front me to guide and correct my fingers when I had my 1st class with Stephen. Just like everybody else, I took the online lessons for few months with other teacher and also learned from Youtube on my own in the last two years. I can play but I knew I was missing something.

He really brought me to the next level.
Katherine
Lesson was fun!!!!

I can play the basic chords before I met him. Stephen can oversee the problems and fix it when in the first lesson. I was like....WoW!!! He is a experienced guitar instructor. Impressed!!!

"This is the guy you are looking for.

At 42 I finally got around to buying my first guitar (no musical background other than fan) and set about teaching myself with books and videos. 10 months later I realized that in spite of working at it every day I was going to get to the 1-year mark and not be able to play a single song all the way through (of the 70's and 80's hard rock that I love, I could play "Twinkle-Twinkle Little Star" pretty well). I was rapidly becoming "that guy" who can play sloppy intros to 300 songs, but nothing else.

I looked around the web, and settled on Ahmad because of his credentials and reviews, and I could not be happier with my choice.

The thing that makes Ahmad special is that he put as much effort into becoming a great guitar teacher as he did in becoming a great guitar player. Every lesson is tailored exactly to my ability at that time. If ever I have had particular trouble with something Ahmad is ready with additional material, alternate ways to learn it, different ways to explain it. No matter what the technique or concept, Ahmad has seen this mistake before and knows just what to do. Some days I leave with many pages of material to master, and some days just one or two. It is all about how slowly or quickly I am picking up the new thing, and all about learning things the right way so that the foundation is solid when I am ready to advance to the next level. There is no schedule or competition (except with myself) and the only objective is to learn more and get better.

To show examples in action Ahmad routinely finds 70s and 80s hard rock for me (not every single note is from Guns-n-Roses of course, but if a particular concept relates to something in a familiar song from the genre, that's the one Ahmad will pick for me to master). You do not have to learn jazz! (I mean if jazz is your thing I am certain that Ahmad can teach you that.)

I really doubt that there is a player at any level (or in any style) who would not learn a lot from Ahmad (that is if you are prepared to be humble and possibly review some foundational material you think you know already... if you knew it, Ahmad would not be teaching it to you... he can hear that your timing is off, or if you didn't hit all of the strings in that chord, and so can your audience). (Once, while I was performing an exercise from the previous lesson, Ahmad had his back to me digging in his filing cabinet for my next materials and said "Did you play the fifth note with an upstroke?"... He heard that, it was supposed to be a down stroke and he heard a difference so slight I didn't even know I was doing it.)

If you are a beginner as I was, my advice is to commit to four lessons with Ahmad. By the end of that time you will hear that you are advancing, and more importantly you will understand where you were and where you are going. It might seem kind of basic at first (which is why I say to go with at least four) but it does not take very long to understand how much better you will be with strong fundamentals. If, instead, you learn to play badly, and you practice regularly, eventually your speed will improve... and then you will play badly fast which actually sounds worse than playing badly slow... all that work for less than nothing.

I have been taking lessons for about a year and half. I can play some Lead Guitar now. And I can play some real songs now. Even those 300 intros are getting tight, that is to say I now play them with the right timing, technique, phrasing and feel!

PS - If Ahmad says "it's time for the Harmony Classes", do it! Like most things Ahmad has taught me, I have resisted it in some way at first, and the harmony lessons are no different. Like everything Ahmad has taught me, the harmony classes have immediately made me better at playing guitar, and have provided a foundation that makes the next thing and the next thing and the next thing easier, faster, and better."

"Collin was actually an employee of my music studio before he moved to Philadelphia. He is an extremely knowledgable and talented bass player, well versed in all aspects of contemporary music including blues and especially jazz. He is also a consummate music theory instructor and is able to teach voice, piano, guitar, and trombone very capably. With his calm, gentle demeanor, Collin is able to put any student of any age at ease and help them to do their musical best! He is well organized and tailors an individual program for every student, being sure to include their musical interests, and then helping them to expand their musical world, I highly recommend him as a teacher!"

What is an Acoustic Bass Guitar? A Look at the Instrument

If you’ve ever seen or heard an MTV Unplugged concert, you’ve probably seen and heard an acoustic bass guitar. This is a hollow body instrument that is the size of an acoustic guitar, but has the sound of a bass.
