Harp:
A stringed musical instrument that has a number of individual strings running at an angle to its soundboard; the strings are plucked with the fingers. Harps have been known since antiquity in Asia, Africa and Europe, dating back at least as early as 3500 BC. The instrument had great popularity in Europe during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, where it evolved into a wide range of variants with new technologies, and was disseminated to Europe's colonies, finding particular popularity in Latin America. We will start by learning how to tune, seating and hand/plucking placement. I have an easy to follow technique where you will learn the strings, notes, how to read music, rhythms, plucking techniques, and songs. As the student advances theory and soloing will be incorporated.

About Karen

Hi! My name is Karen D. I’ve had the pleasure of performing, singing, writing, and recording since I was seven years old. Besides being an Honor Graduate of Berklee School of Music, I have been a lifelong student of the international world-renowned instructors Dante Pavone and Charlie Banacos.

Karen obviously loves the piano & guitar. She’s probably an excellent teacher for those instruments. Why do I say that? That’s what she talked about! She spent half my lesson trying to convince me to learn one of those instruments. Could work on listening skills! Not even sure if she owns a set of bongos herself. Didn’t start teaching me anything until last 10 min & then I had to leave early anyway. So 50 min out of 60 and about 5 I actually learned a few things I could have been practicing for at least 30 min of class. Use her if you want to learn something else other than bongos.

Ms. Karen did a pretty good job, she had ideas for the lesson and provided ideas for the next lesson. She went out of her way to help me with this new idea---------"music" and "reading music." If there was any short fall in the lesson it was on my side and my preparation failings. I have no problem recommending Ms. Karen to others. Regards, JC

Extremely knowledgeable! Karen is a superb guitar instructor. Honestly, I was struggling. Discouraged! She helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and moved me from beginner to intermediate in a matter of months. If you’re getting tired of learning from YouTube and smart phone apps, let Karen kick start your guitar playing. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks Karen!!

Is it hard to play the harp? That’s usually the first question people ask. My answer? Not at all! I teach the harp in three easy steps: Speak, Read, Write .

"Speaking" music simply means learning to listen and play your harp. We learn tunes by ear to start, just like you would if you were learning a language.

Reading and Writing are what allow you to pick up your favorite piece of music and learn it on your own, just like reading a book.

Whether you want to play in a concert hall or in your living room, I will give you the knowledge and technique to help you make the harp a part of your life.

Kathryn has really done a great job teaching the basics of singing to our almost 7 year old daughter. She is the best singing teacher ever and has helped our daughter learn several new songs in a short time. She is very easy going and adapts her style to her students.

My teenager has been working with Anne for two years. During those two years Mrs. Anne has not only meet my child where she is capable but also challenges her to go further beyond being content. Anne has been very patient and understanding. She’s been remarkable in helping my child to learn and play different genres along with growing in her own musical interests. My child is improving on sight reading, and is enhancing her repertoire of harp music. Most important, is that the our communication as Instructor, student, parent, is transparent and full circle. If there’s a musical piece my child has chosen and Mrs. Anne is unfamiliar with, she goes out of her way to look into it. I’m very thankful for Mrs. Anne being knowledgeable and able to instruct and guide where I can not. She’s a fantastic instructor!

I welcome adults and children who are new to the harp or who want to increase their skills. As a teacher, I focus on helping students be able to play the music that is interesting or fun for them. I will start with a firm background on the basics of hand position and reading music, and then we can take it away with what thrills you, whether it is pop, folk, classical, religious, or something else. I hope we can take this journey in music together!

About Mariah

I am a harpist and a scientist. At Brigham Young University, I minored in music, emphasizing in harp, while earning a geology degree. I also performed in the BYU Harp Ensemble. "Anne is a fantastic teacher who brings so much warmth, patience, and skill to each lesson! She took me from a complete novice who didn't even know how to properly pluck a string to being able to impress family and friends with familiar songs. She doesn't have you go out and spend a ton on books or materials either, which I've experienced while learning other musical instruments. Anne provides very detailed assignment notes with each lesson too, which she then emails so you can have something tangible to refer to while practicing instead of having to take notes yourself or keep it all in your head somehow. Highly recommend taking lessons from one of the best!"
