Learn to play the drum skillfully with an experienced drummer and instrumentalist
Through my work with the M Gray Music Academy (Macy Gray) and my tenure at the Hollywood School of Rock as teacher and Show Director, I have developed successful programs for students ranging in age from 5 years old and beyond. I have mentored numerous young musical groups in beneficial rehearsal techniques, live performance and basically all the things you need to know about being in a band that wants to be great! As we explore the exciting world of music, guitars, drums and percussion, we will cover all aspects of music theory, music history and ear training through video, audio and text examples. Students will be provided with all the necessary tools to fully understand musical concepts and have the ability to play for recreation or at a professional level. You won't need any books to start but I do suggest a small 3 ring binder for notes, literature, weekly hand outs and homework . For drum students: we will start by evaluating your current level of ability and then create a practice plan that works best for you. Basic hand and foot techniques and I will also incorporate grooves and beats from your favorite songs. Future texts may include: Syncopation, Stick Control, Drum Wisdom, Patterns, Even and the odds and various snare drum sight reading examples. I will also make available notes and exercises from my exclusive personal archives (not available in any book). Course topics for drums include: rhythm and meter, rudiments, reading and writing music notation, stick control, single and double foot technique, four way coordination, soloing concepts, improvisation, stylistic playing, brush and mallet technique, working with metronomes, playing with electronic loops, beneficial practice methods, tuning and drum maintenance..."I can help prepare you for further education for music schools and auditions such as (Berklee College of Music, N.E. Conservatory, Musician's Institute/ PIT)

Lessons with Al are always a high point of my week. Learning guitar as an adult is challenging, and he is unfailingly encouraging and motivational. His teaching method - a mix of music theory, exercises, improvisation, and practicing songs - keeps things fresh and challenging every week, and has helped me become better at productive practicing outside of each session. Al is also willing to jump down the rabbit hole with me when I bring him something I can’t figure out on my own. I cannot recommend him highly enough. He is a wonderful teacher.

Al is incredibly passionate about passing his expertise to the next generation. My son studied drum set with him for 3 years, and is now a jazz studies major in college. The enthusiasm and knowledge he will impart on your student is invaluable. Highly recommended!
