I have been teaching piano to students of all ages and backgrounds for over 10 years. I am comfortable teaching in both classical/traditional and rock/pop/jazz styles, and most often help guide students in one direction or the other based on their skills and goals. Most students choose a learning path on the piano based on how much time they'd like to devote to practicing and if they'd like to learn to read traditional music notation. As a musician and teacher, I don't believe there is one 'correct' style of music learning. Not all talented musicians are conservatory trained and can sight read Bach - although it IS really fun to play Bach. For many students, the goal is simply to enjoy playing the instrument, to learn songs that they love and to have some ability to just sit down and play/improvise! Within the first few lessons, you can expect to know basic chords and scales and simple reading fundamentals, and within a few months you should expect to have a few songs under your fingers! Piano is a lifelong journey, but a good teacher makes you feel confident and engaged along the way, not overwhelmed or intimidated. If you take lessons with me, you can expect to have fun, push yourself to new levels and deepen your love of music!
About Chresten H.

I have been a performing musician for almost 20 years and teaching for over 10 years. I consider myself a multi-instrumentalist, my first instruments were the drumset and piano and I began studying guitar in my teens. My love of music has led me to study a wide range of subjects, but my primary teaching these days is focused in intermediate classical music or rock/pop/jazz styles. I tend to help steer students towards a learning path based on their goals and experience. I strongly believe that there is no single path to becoming a good musician, so I've worked hard to be flexible in how and what I teach. I'm just as comfortable teaching Bach and Beethoven as I am teaching The Beatles and Foo Fighters. One thing that is common among all my lesson is a strong foundation of music fundamentals: sight reading, rhythm, basic theory. I focus on building skills that will last a lifetime in addition to learning your favorite songs. Students who build a solid foundation learn much faster and retain much better! Lessons are fast paced but thorough and always friendly and encouraging. I use a wide variety of materials, method books and play-along tracks - I have also written two instructional drum books which I use frequently with my drum students. I love empowering new students, watching them grow and develop their love of music - hope to hear from you soon!

Chresten is a fun and informative teacher. The pace is a little faster but challenged me to move forward. Patient and takes the time to go over any questions asked. Very thorough. Thank you.

Really nice class on topics I was aware of but not particularly experienced at... Chresten was fast but not too fast....he explained things over and over, aive us time to sample it, and then gave us pieces to practice on!
