Hi, I'm a chess tutor and competitor! I teach students of all ages and skill levels and have volunteered for the non-profit organizations Chess Challenge in DC and Chess Girls DC. I focus on one-on-one lessons with instruction geared towards preparing my students for competitive play. My rate is $50/hr. I started playing competitive chess when I was 11 and am now a USCF Candidate Master (CM), rated 2182 USCF and 2154 FIDE. Hopefully, I'll have the US National Master (NM) and FIDE CM title soon as well! Growing up, I competed in the Massachusetts State Scholastic Chess Championship three times and was featured in Chess Life. I was also ranked 37 out of the top 100 players aged 18 in the US in 2010. As a young adult, I've competed throughout the US, defeating several National Masters (NMs), FIDE Masters (FMs), and achieving a draw with International Master (IM) Martin Neubauer. I hope to channel my experience towards making you a better player! Try to solve the puzzles posted in the photos section, which are taken from my own tournament games. The circular icon on the lower left-hand corner of each puzzle indicates who's move it is.

I'm an advanced player, and Daniel is patient and clear in helping me to improve - he's extremely knowledgeable and provides resources and homework so I can prepare for the next lesson
I am new to chess will likely be a happy newbie for ever. I appreciate Daniel’s patience and willingness to explain details, sometimes multiple times, and answer basic questions about terminology, how to navigate chess sites, etc. He is flexible with his lesson plans and adjusts them to meet the needs of his student.
My 14 year old son had several lessons with Daniel and enjoyed them very much. Daniel is clearly passionate both about chess and teaching. His lessons are always planned in advance and you can request specific topic to be covered. He is very patient, and allows student time to think through moves and strategies. After the lesson, he gives you a 'homework' puzzle to solve, which was reviewed in the following lesson. Definitely recommend!
