I have been playing music almost my entire life. I first started on trombone in 4th grade then switched to guitar in 6th. I picked up the electric bass in my later teenage years and learned the upright bass (both jazz and classical) in college. My students get the benefit of my education, as well as the mistakes I have made along the way I strongly believe that listening is the most critical, and overlooked, aspect of learning to make music. Just like we first learned to speak by listening to our parents and mimicking them, we learn to make music by listening to our favorite musicians and mimicking them I also believe that what a student gets out of his lessons is proportional to what he puts in. My teaching style is methodical and analytical and shows greatest results with students who are honest with themselves about what they expect to accomplish and are willing to put in the work to accomplish it I have a degree in jazz performance from The Ohio State University and have played in numerous rock, jazz and off-broadway bands over the last 30 years. Now playing is something I do primarily for fun and my #1 goal is always that my students have as much fun playing as I do

Absolutely stellar teacher. I haven’t come out of a lesson once having not been satisfied and inspired to keep moving forward. His lessons are well-structured and well-paced. He’s also a cool guy. Highly recommend!
I have been practicing Bass for seven years, taken lessons with four different teachers, and I can confidently say that I have found the right fit. When I first met with David I expressed my frustration how in the past I had a very hard time understanding and learning music theory. I would get to a point where I felt overwhelmed and confused and all motivation to learn more would come to a stop. What makes David so unique as a teacher is that he is sensitive to finding “your edge” and offers you just the right amount of information that you can handle- not too little or too easy that your progress feels stagnant, and not too much that your brain goes into shut down mode. Since then David has stayed on track with my original intention for taking lessons - in my case it was learning music theory and technique so that I could feel more confident with playing with other musicians in a jam or band setting and to develop a practice routine that is efficient and makes the most out of my time. The sequencing of lessons that David chooses creates a strong foundation for the next, opening doors and creating “aha” moments that motivate you to want to learn more. He is like the Mr. Miyagi of bass teachers! I have had ten lessons so far with David and what I have learned during this time has covered way more than what I have been able to achieve with other teachers and on my own. My bandmates have noticed a significant difference not only in my playing, but with songwriting contributions and my confidence level. Some teachers in the past have been dedicated guitar teachers teaching me bass. The fact that David is a bass teacher teaching bass makes all the difference in my learning experience. I appreciate his professionalism and his knowledge of his craft and am very pleased to say that I will continue to work with David - I have finally found my teacher.
David is very thorough and professional. He insists on building a strong technical foundation--getting the fundamentals right before moving you forward.
