About Gabriel H.

I graduated with a BA in jazz studies from Columbia in 2007 and have been teaching since 2005. I have played in many different projects, covering many styles including Rock, Jazz, Latin, Hip hop, classical, orchestral, and country. So, I have a strong understanding on the specifics of each of these styles, and a big part of my lesson plan is to teach my students to be as versatile as possible. Hence they have many options as far as playing music. I also play a wide variety of instruments including Piano, Latin Percussion, Mallets, Drum set, Guitar, and bass, so if at any point a student has an interest in trying something different t they have many options. *** Lesson Details *** Gabriel has been drumming professionally for nearly a decade, and teaching for seven years. In 2007 Gabriel received his BA in Jazz Studies/percussion performance from Columbia college Chicago, where he studied Drumset with Chicago legend Tom Hipskind, conga virtuoso's Rubin Alverez, and Giovanni Hildalgo, and studio vibraphonist Rick Embach. Gabriel has a high success rate with his students including the winner of the "Heat Strokes" drum competition 2007, Joey Handley. Gabriel's method of teaching is relaxed, yet enthusiastic he strives for making even the most complex musical ideas as simple as possible, and overall making learning fun. *** Studio Equipment *** Music, Music Stands, Acoustic Piano, Keyboard, Fender Rhodes, Hammond A100 Organ, Drum Set, Hand Drums, Guitars, Bass, metronome, amps, computer and more! *** Travel Equipment *** When teaching at a student's home I am able to bring: Music, Music Stand, Drum Sticks, Hand Drum, Guitar, Bass, Computer, metronome and more! *** Specialties *** I work out of various books for drums: Stick Control, Advanced Bop Drumming, A Funky Primer for The Rock Drummer, and also have an assortment of my own exercises and rudiments. I also teach Jazz keyboard Chord voicings, advanced Jazz Theory, and how to walk basslines with the left hand on keyboard instruments and can translate bass patterns over to the Electric bass as well.

Teacher's Studio

Gabriel is an amazing music teacher not only is he helping me with bass guitar but also understanding a bit of music theory. He shows me ways to to help maximize the amount of learning I can get out of practicing. Overall he is a great teacher with knowledge of a multitude of instruments and music in general.

Elliana really enjoyed her first lesson with Gabriel. She was able to play some new things for me right after he left. I'm excited to see how she grows.
