I have three children, and I started teaching my oldest to play the piano at 3-years-old. She is now in middle school and I feel great joy listening to her play and watching her perform in the band at her school. I have played for my church; I directed multiple choirs from youth to senior choirs for almost 10 years and took pride teaching students from all ages there as well. Learning music is fun, challenging, and actually helps the brain develop. Music can relieve stress and boost self-confidence. I have witnessed the transformation as my young students, grow, play alone and accompany other musicians and enjoy all the benefits of learning to play music. I take pride in two of my previous students advancing to college for music. I believe in helping students experience the joy of music-making by giving them foundational knowledge and skills to succeed, introducing them to great and inspirational music, and providing continual positive encouragement. Having a solid technical foundation is just as important to me as developing facile reading skills, but neither of these matter if a student is not having fun along the way.
