Guitar lessons, or any music lessons, are about sound and understanding it in a way that is comfortable and fun for the student so that they can apply it as they wish. I don't force students to learn how to read music, in fact, I let them choose the lesson and only guide them if the lessons are not getting slowly but surely harder and more challenging in more than one way. The principle goal is for the student to understand sound, how it can work by moving your hand or just one finger, the difference that can make to the sound, and again, how to apply that sound in a musical context. This applies to both chords, lines, harmony and melody, the works. I teach Jazz Guitar Primarily, but have been playing over 15 years (guitar) and 23 years (piano). I have a wealth of knowledge of theory which I do believe to be extremely valuable, but only after the student is able to comprehend the sounds they are playing, and, of course, if they have questions. I believe lessons are an exchange between the student and teacher - both learn something new every class, and I hope to inspire my students to the degree that the will have many questions - as time goes on, hopefully they will be able to answer many of these questions themselves.
