About Julia V.

Who do I teach? Adult students and mature young people who want to learn with fun and enthusiasm and gain real singing craft. What developmental skills do I hope to pass on? Good vocal exercises that fit student's current needs and five steps to address vocal problems. I work with the body as an expressive instrument building strength, posture and acting ability. People usually say "I've never met an opera singer!" I'll take you on a journey to learn how a singer can fill a concert hall with sound singing louder than an orchestra or spin a soft high note like a golden thread. I enjoyed singing in highschool, won a contest and went to college as a music major. I graduated with a BA in vocal performance from Western Washington University and an MA thru the Opera Department of the Boston and New England Conservatories. I sang oratorio, recitals and premiered new works internationally. Touring educational programs, being a MusikGarten teacher and Suzuki Parent of twins, I gained strategies for developing musical ability in all ages. My students have successful auditions for college opera and music theater programs, and as soloists. Students gain a larger vocal range and an easy, natural way of singing whether it is in a rock band, choir or as a soloist. Together we harness the joy of singing to build a solid technique. *** Lesson Details *** I am persistent and positive! What developmental skills do I hope to pass on? Good vocal exercises that fit student's current needs and five steps to address vocal problems. I work with the body as an expressive instrument building strength, posture and acting ability. Working and performing helped me to be a resourceful and experienced teacher who understands the process of becoming a singer. I believe that a sense of fun and play helps you to accomplish your goals quickly. Beginnners will learn how the voice works, the basics of breathing to support their sound, how to take care of and develop an instrument which is a part of the body. We will learn music; familiar songs will become stronger, new songs will be learned and memorized and organized so that you have just the right songs for future performances. Songs that are more complex and challenging are suggested as the student is ready. Understanding music theory and sing-reading help in learning songs and give confidence in ensembles. Advanced students focus both on trouble spots and becoming complete performers. Learn to understand the changes that voices naturally go thru at different ages. I look forward to giving you my full focus and celebrating your growth and accomplishments! *** On-Line Lessons *** Students need a fast internet connection. I try to use the latest free App for simultaneous music sharing such as the rockoutloud.live platform. I provide a basic library of vocal music at my home studio and pull targeted books for each student. Students may join Newszik and MuseScore to share scores on an iPad with a stylus pen and/or should plan to print out their current songs in order to mark their scores. It is helpful to have two screens, one for the lesson interface and one for scores and listening (such as YouTube). Please provide a keyboard, strong internet connection, two devices if possible, once for the lesson and one to pull up music scores, videos and accompaniments. A stand to hold your device securely, a notebook and pencil as well as a low distraction environment. *** Studio Equipment *** High quality keyboard. Headphones and Blue mic. iPad and paper library of vocal, piano and music theory books, so students can sample different kinds of songs before purchasing books or downloading songs on their own. Music stand, Computer/iPhone for accompaniments and examples you want me to hear. *** Specialties *** As an opera and musical theater, Oratorio and church singer, I help singers of all levels improve within their genre from popular music to opera. A good singing technique will help performers in any style stay healthy and enjoy an expressive singing instrument.

Julia is a superb, sensitive coach, who knows how to help her students connect with their audiences through body language, voice tone, and word selection and emphasis. She gives one the confidence to be at his or her best when in front of the audience. She has helped me with every critically important speech I have delivered during the last 5 years. I look forward to working with Julia again on my next audience-facing event.
