Learn Viola with ease from an experienced musician and teacher
While I primarily use the Barbara Barber books for beginning viola, I can use any method book you prefer, adding the supplemental materials I've developed, or just take you through ensemble music. In viola lessons, we will play a lot of duets, since viola is typically a supporting/ensemble instrument, but you'll also learn how to be a solid viola soloist. Beginning students will gain a solid grasp of all the "essentials": basic theory, sight reading skills, counting, and technique. As soon as you have these, you have a lot of freedom with what you want to work on! I take kids, adults, and teens. I have experience teaching kids with disabilities including Down's syndrome, trauma/PTSD, ADHD, cerebral palsy, and more.
About Sylvia P.

Hi! I'm Sylvia--I play piano, violin, and viola professionally, and guitar, flute, and clarinet amateurly. I'm in school to become a music therapist, since I've seen how powerful music can be in treating a huge variety of illnesses, both physical and mental. My teaching core values are: -praise > criticism -students' goals trump teacher's ego -technique should be practical and logical, not "because this is the way it's done" -kids are smart humans -music theory is cool -there is no one right learning style I want to help my students develop their skills in a way that respects them and their strengths, helps them achieve their goals, and aligns with their personal learning style, no matter how different that is from mine. Music is AWESOME; I'm excited to get to learn about it with you!

Sylvia gave me resources to start building a new talent from day 1. She is always professional, on time, encouraging and patient. Great experience, well worth the money!

She really focuses on encouraging students when they perform well, motivating you to work harder. She’s very patient when explaining things and makes sure you understand it before moving on. Overall a great teacher!
