Hi there! I've been teaching and playing saxophone, flute, and clarinet professionally for over a decade. I'm a member of a well-known saxophone quartet and frequently tour the United States and Europe giving concerts and teaching. I live in New York City and have worked on Broadway, in film scores, and orchestras as a woodwind specialist. I hold three degrees, including a Doctorate, in music performance. I am the Head Faculty of woodwinds at the Youth Orchestra of St. Luke's in Manhattan, where I teach a range of ability levels in the elementary-middle school range. I also teach privately online and (pre-COVID) in a beautiful loft studio in Brooklyn. I am very passionate about music education at any age. I want my students to leave lessons empowered, engaged, and with more love for music-making than they came in with. Music is both incredibly fun and challenging, and I make the learning process a positive one.

My son has been studying with Mr Thomas for 5 years! He is a very talented musician/teacher and I’ve seen such progress in my sons playing over the years. He has helped him write his own pieces and prepped him for his orchestra performances. “Mr. Thomas is really fun to play music with and you learn a lot. He even helped me with transcribing a video game soundtrack that I loved into my recital piece”! We highly recommend Mr. Thomas!
My son took clarinet lessons in-person and then transitioned to online when COVID happened. He tried piano and violin before but clarinet is the first instrument that Micah was super excited about. He learned and improved so much with the one on one instruction with Thomas. He says clarinet is his passion now and looks forward to every lesson. I recommend Thomas to teach your child. He is patient, kind and can find ways to motivate kids to play at their best.
As a group Clarinet and Flute teacher with Youth Orchestra of St. Luke's, Thomas Giles created an engaging and inspiring music learning curriculum for his students. At each recital all of his students were able to introduce themselves, the piece they have learned, and a bit of history or commentary to go along. Throughout online learning Dr. Giles continued a supportive and creative environment, even through zoom, where each of his students composed and performed their own piece. If you are looking for your student to come away from lessons with a high level of ability and confidence on their instrument look no further than Dr. Giles, they will have the added bonus of learning important skills such as public speaking and presenting. They may even take away some composition and arranging skills!
