Perfect Piano skills with an enthusiastic industry veteran with years of expertise to offer
It is amazing how far-reaching the benefits of piano study can be for people of all ages! Studying music helps bolster math, reading, and critical thinking skills while developing creativity and discipline. Because every student’s needs and interests are different, every lesson will be individually tailored. The curriculum is delivered and discussed with candor and humor. Students are treated with respect and encouraged to push themselves. Piano study should increase confidence, creativity, and love of music. Curriculum Piano curriculum is based on the Bastien Piano Basics program. At every lesson, students learn to read music and develop musicality by working on theory exercises. Using first the Bastien Piano books and then supplementary “fun” books from Faber and other publishers, students put their skills to work, playing songs appropriate to their level of accomplishment. Many pieces include an optional teacher duet, giving students an opportunity to play with another musician – an important skill for any pianist. Practice The single most valuable work any piano student can do to excel is PRACTICE. Each student will be given a practice record, which includes room to note their assignments, as well as a place to record the days and amount of time devoted to practice each week. While each student’s needs differ, the key to successful practice is consistency. Ideally, a beginning student should practice twenty to thirty minutes a day, five or more days a week. Parents can best help young students by encouraging this consistency and setting up a routine. Once a student has taken a seat at the piano, however, parents are encouraged to allow practice to be relatively independent.
About Vanessa P.

I have loved singing and the stage since childhood. In addition to a variety of engagements as a musical director and vocal coach, I've been fortunate to perform alongside Broadway legends on theatre and cabaret stages. In addition to NYC and regional theatre, I've been featured in a number of shows at Disneyland, and have been a professional holiday caroler for over a decade. I'm the soprano for award-winning vocal quintet Marquee Five, recently described as “Manhattan Transfer for the new millennium.” You can hear me on Marquee Five’s debut CD “8-Track Throwback.” I hold a BA in Music (Voice) from UCLA and a MFA in Theater (Acting) from Brooklyn College. When not performing, I teach private voice and piano in my Maplewood, NJ home and spend time with my husband, two kids, two cats, and our dog. In our lessons, students can expect an individualized approach. We work together to expand your range, refine musicality and phrasing, increase power and versatility, and bring songs to life with thoughtful emotional connection. It has been my privilege to work with singers that run the gamut from absolute beginners to Broadway veterans and successful recording artists, as well as younger singers who have gone on to land roles in both student and professional productions. The only prerequisite for our work is a love of singing - the rest we can do together!

Vanessa is an incredible voice teacher! I’ve been working with her for nearly eight years and each lesson has been an exciting mix of technical training, performance technique, and engaging musical selections. She has both challenged and supported me through the development and expression of my craft and I couldn’t recommend someone more!

Vanessa is an absolute maestro. My daughter has been singing with her for six years and has blossomed. They have an amazing partnership. If you want your child (and their voice) to be nurtured by a teacher who is phenomenal at supporting and challenging her students, Vanessa is your best choice!
