While I primarily use the Barbara Barber books for beginning viola, I can use any method book you prefer, adding the supplemental materials I've developed, or just take you through ensemble music. In viola lessons, we will play a lot of duets, since viola is typically a supporting/ensemble instrument, but you'll also learn how to be a solid viola soloist.

Beginning students will gain a solid grasp of all the "essentials": basic theory, sight reading skills, counting, and technique. As soon as you have these, you have a lot of freedom with what you want to work on!

I take kids, adults, and teens. I have experience teaching kids with disabilities including Down's syndrome, trauma/PTSD, ADHD, cerebral palsy, and more.

About Sylvia

Hi! I'm Sylvia--I play piano, violin, and viola professionally, and guitar, flute, and clarinet amateurly. I'm in school to become a music therapist, since I've seen how powerful music can be in treating a huge variety of illnesses, both physical and mental. My teaching core values are: -praise

I have been a piano and voice instructor for the last five years. Teaching music is my passion! There is nothing more pleasing than helping a student realize their full potential in music. I believe in going at a student's pace and giving them technique, music theory, and ear training they need to be successful and apt performers. Parents and students recognize me for my reliability and patience. And most of all, my students learn while still having fun! It's my goal to make students smile every lesson. Getting you excited is what I live for!

My mission is to help students reach their fullest potential as singers and to build their confidence in the process. Lessons focus on each student as an individual and can encompass anything from vocal technique and song repertoire to audition coaching and even recording sessions to help the students with a project or to help them simply hear the subtleties in their voice more clearly as they train and grow.

Vocal Technique covered includes:

Range Building, Tone & Color, Vocal and Musical Dynamics, Diction, Releasing the Jaw, Opening Up the Sound, Body Conditioning For Singers and finally, Breath Support*

*I teach breath support in a way most teachers do not. I help students gain strong abdominal muscles and teach them how to use them to sing with more power and control. Rather than releasing the belly (as most teachers recommend) I show students how to breathe into their backs and use all three lobes of the lungs (upper, middle, lower). This allows them to keep the abs strong ...

Michael is a stickler for doing things right, but in a nice way. I feel that his mode of teaching is best, because it builds a solid foundation for further learning.
ELLIOT
After a brief intro, Mike explained where're going with his lessons. I was having some problems getting my fingers near certain fret areas he wanted me to work on, so he very kindly placed some colors tape where I'm to put my fingers. That helped a lot. Been practicing an hour per day, & I'm getting a bit better daily. I've got a long way to go, but with Mike's help I'll get there. ELLIOT

I have been taking lessons with Chris for 7 years and the knowledge he has given me has proved invaluable in my experience as a musician. I am currently attending Vanderbilt University and majoring in jazz guitar performance. My lessons with Chris prepared me for my audition and have helped me face the tedious workload that all music majors face. The work I have done with Chris helped me develop a jazz vocabulary for improvising, learn a repertoire of jazz standards, and develop a time feel that has helped me when playing everything from jazz to rock to metal. I would recommend Chris's lessons to anyone who would like to learn guitar or improve upon the skills they already have..

"Donna was so patient with me. She gave me many ideas and homework to help make my website successful. She even spent outside time looking at my website and comparing it to my competitors to decide what was needed before she met with me as she had comprised a list of details that I needed to work on. I loved the attention she gave me even with my lack of knowledge.
