My daughter started online lessons with Jennifer at the beginning of the pandemic. After a year and a half of lessons my daughter said she could sight read music like reading a book and her musical ability had greatly improved. We did choose to eventually find in person classes, at Jennifer’s suggestion, as she felt that is the best way to learn. My daughter still misses Jennifer and her teaching style almost a year later.

At age 55 I started lessons with Jenny and immediately she was able to focus my practice on areas I really need to improve upon. I had only been playing violin for a year with very limited exposure to music way back in high school on a marching band drumline. She is very patient and understanding of the time challenges of working adults trying to lean a new skill. Moving from a H.S. drumline to violin is pretty much a quantum leap in understanding of music theory and execution, but Jenny broke down the process and was able to bring me to a level where I could perform confidently in front of audiences and gave me a whole new appreciation of music. She is dedicated, thoughtful and can help you achieve your music goals.

Thank you Jenny!

For 15 years I was Director of a Center for the Arts in Plymouth, MN. Jennifer Lang was a valued member of our faculty here. Not only her finesse and expertise as a performer, but the wide range of her teaching skills made lessons with her a very positive experience for our students.

Her complete command of a wide range of styles of music enables her to connect easily with students, wherever they may be in their musical studies.

She's very personable and works warmly and respectfully with parents and students alike.

I recommend Jennifer Lang without hesitation - she's terrific!

In the lessons, I always take the time to get to know the student's interests and learning style. I like to use warm-up cards, poems, creatures and all kinds of fun things to make the lesson interesting. For extra incentive I also send lesson notes each week, which helps to remind us both what we worked on in the lesson, and what the student is expected to practice. For more advanced students, the lesson notes also include composer studies and music history. When needed or requested, I'll send video tutorials or recordings.

I have played violin for the past 20 years and received my Bachelor of Arts in Music at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. I think the most important part of violin playing is having fun and enjoying what you do, so I really emphasize this in my teaching. I also think it is important that we use our bodies well and avoid playing related pain, so my teaching focuses on getting players into a comfortable position with their violin. I have taught all ages, and am great teaching in the beginning stages when everything feels new and difficult! I also do consults for more seasoned players who want to improve their technique, or who are coming back to the instrument after an injury.

About Marial

I have been teaching for five years and have experience with a variety of different students. My own background is centered in classical violin, and I have a Bachelor of Arts in Music, but I also have done clinics and performances in jazz, mariachi, and fiddle. I like to cater to my students and fin

"I highly recommend Miss. Ilona!

My 10 year old boy/girl twins have had lessons with Miss. Ilona for several months. Miss. Ilona, who is classically trained, not only keeps a nice balance between theory and performance, but also accommodates my twins' interests in contemporary music by helping them with their Spring Choral Concert music.

Every teacher has a point of view, personal preferences, and methodological bias that may fit one child but may not fit another child as well. Miss. Ilona, however, constantly leaves her doors open to communicate and listen, and make an effort to understand how my twins feel about the lesson material. She constantly adapts the material and tries new approaches to make them better violinists.

What I like most about Miss. Ilona is that she is willing to provide her students with opportunities to participate in Fund Raising and charity events by donating their musical talents. This allows her students to give back to the community what they have learned. On April 17, 2015 my twins performed at Theosophical Society Fund Raising at Deerfield Beach. On May 30, 2015, they performed at Children’s Oasis International Fund Raising to "enable today youth be tomorrow's leaders” in Africa.

After those events, my son wrote in his essay, “What matters to me most is to make people happy by doing what I enjoy doing…… While we played, the audience was very happy and cheered us after each song. It really made us feel so good…… After the performance, many people came to us and thanked us to play music for them. It really made us feel appreciated and so special. When I hear people saying they raised a lot more money thanks to us, I feel so blessed. I am proud that I can make difference by doing what I enjoy doing……special thanks to my violin teacher, Miss. Ilona and my twin sister."

As Hillary Clinton said, "...it takes a village to raise a child (the traditional African proverb)" during her own presidential compaign during 2007, it seems to Miss. Ilona, raising a musical child is a collaborative business, a business that the teacher, the student and the parents have to run together in order to be successful. Collaborative decision making with a child requires a willingness to listen, negotiate and compromise. As Jessica Turner (music educator) argues music instructors know about teaching music, but when it comes to your child and how s/he learns, we parents are the expert. As an educator myself, I appreciate that Miss. Ilona lets me work together with her to ensure the fit and quality of my twins musical instruction. I feel fortunate that we have found such a great instructor for my twins!"

"I have been taking violin lessons from Speedy for almost 10 years, and I cannot describe how much I have improved. He is a patient, funny, and kind individual who truly enjoys teaching music, as he teaches young seven-year-old's (like I was) and adults alike. I just recently began taking Skype lessons with Speedy, and I enjoy and learn from lessons as much now as I did when I took lessons in person. Speedy is profoundly organized, as he often times remembers what we worked on during the previous lesson better than I do. I would also like to accredit him for flexibility when I have a schedule conflict or cannot make the lesson. I genuinely do think that you come across a teacher like Speedy once in a blue moon."

Violin Tips: Stiff Shoulders and Arm Pain

Playing the violin should be fun - not a pain! Some arm fatigue is normal when you're first starting out, but anything more than that may be a sign of poor posture, technique or instrument placement. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you practice and play... 1. Relax. Many beginner players tense up their shoulders, arms or wrist without even realizing it, which can cause a lot of problems. Just relax! Focus on your breathing, but also don't lose your posture. 2. Check your techni …
