About Kris

As a life-long student of music I know how overwhelming the subject can be. In my classical piano roots no one taught me how music really worked or how to write. After ten years of study I became highly proficient at reading the notes on the page and moving my fingers to play them, but I hit a wall

I feel so lucky to have discovered Kris on TakeLessons. Every lesson begins with him checking in on my progress in a variety of different areas and every lesson ends with notes of our session and different areas for me to practice before our next session. There's always a great mix of homework types that Kris lets you explore in a way that is organic and fun for how you want to learn. He will work with YOU to help find the lessons that inspire you to keep practicing and staying engaged. We also spend a decent amount of time on music theory and composition, so I feel like I'm actually learning the instrument and not just following patterns. Lastly, Kris has a high level of empathy and is great at encouraging his students. He always makes me feel good about the progress I'm making while still challenging me to be better. I can't recommend Kris enough.

Kris is great .. always positive and upbeat. Clearly is masterful at understanding music theory and its applications to the piano. Working at a rapid pace and after just 3 lessons, I feel like I understand the piano. I would say that my understanding of some music theory (as a guitarist) helps me keep up with Kris, but he is a great listener and pauses when necessary.

Amazing instructor. I've come so far from working with him.

Music Theory is a broad area that comprises both an understanding of HOW music is constructed and WHY those constructions are what they are. For example, there are three types of minor scales: natural, harmonic, and melodic. The HOW of minor scales includes the pattern of half- and whole-steps that create that particular scale. The WHY explores the history of the evolution of the modal system to the major/minor system and how natural minor (originally aeolian mode) was adapted to meet composers' desires for harmony and melody to function to their liking.

Whether you're a beginner that needs help learning to read music and understand rhythm, an intermediate player trying to crack the mystery that is key signatures or playing with a metronome (hint: it's a learned skill and one that can be taught!), or an advanced music student who needs help with AP Music Theory, college music courses, or a more functional understanding of what you're doing as a performer, I can help. My training is ...

We will begin by establishing goals and determining what the student already knows. From there we will tailor lessons to fit the student's needs and to help them get to where they want to go. We will always be connecting concepts we learn in theory to their practice in music. I am a firm believer in making sure the student has many different ways in which they can apply and understand the material we are working on.

Music Student Face-Off: Memorizers vs. Readers | Which is Better?

As you learn songs and work through your music books, do you memorize the notes? Or do you read along every time you play? In this post, music teacher Vanessa G. discusses the pros and cons to the approaches...   Imagine your teacher gives you a piece of music to study. What's your process? Do you listen to a recording, memorizing the melody and the stylistic aspects before you begin, and then as you play? Or would you sit down and sight read the notes, and perfect it from that star …

How to Change the Key of a Song With and Without a Computer

What Does it Mean to Change a Key? To change a song’s “key” means to shift the whole musical system to a higher or lower position. This process is called “transposition.” Performers often need transpose a song to better fit their voices. That way, a performer with a naturally lower singing voice (like myself) will be able to more comfortably sing a song that was originally written for someone with a naturally higher voice. Or vice versa.  For singers, transposition feels fairly …

Understanding Music Theory Through Colors

Struggling to understand a music theory concept? Sometimes, all it takes is a tweak to the way material is taught for a student to really grasp it. Here, Pittsburgh voice teacher Jennifer V. reveals her unique ROYGBIV method...   Has your child ever come home in tears because they just couldn’t master a skill they learned in school? You listen, wipe their tears and tell them “Tomorrow is a new day,” and “I know you can do it!” But the next day he or she comes home upset about th …
