Whether you're a beginner or an advanced violinist preparing for an audition, whether your lesson takes place online or in my Nashville studio, I seek to help meet the goals of each student on their journey learning the violin. With 24 years experience as a member of a professional symphony orchestra, I know firsthand how important it is to learn how to play in a way that feels comfortable, without muscle tension. Developing good habits while having fun learning the essentials describes a typical lesson. If you have a favorite song you'd like to learn, feel free to bring it to the lesson!

About Kirsten

I'm a professional violinist in Nashville, TN. I graduated from DePaul university in Chicago with a Bachelor's Degree in Violin Performance. I was also a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, where I received training from the world's top conductors to become a professional orchestral musician.

Me and my daughter had a great experience with Kirsten! She is very warm, flexible, and has a friendly, professional teaching style. An overall lovely person who is very talented at her craft. Would definitely recommend!

Kirsten Mitchell and I first met in a classroom at Austin Peay University where she was teaching a beginners violin class with individual instruction. Nearly all of her students turned out to be teenagers. Retired, I had already turned 65.
Over time, and with patient, coaching, and encouragement from Kirsten, I have learned to play several
Bach pieces, among others. Each new work requires that yet another skill or technique be learned. We have made our way from great simplicity to greater complexity, each step requiring more control and capacity.
How did we do that? Examples! When my attempts at discovery came short, Kirsten could always provide examples so matter-of-fact that they seldom intimidated. Just try it; just do it! It’s like learning from a big sister or parent who only desires your success and would do what it takes to accomplish that.
There have been times when my vote would have been for her to leave violin study to someone who had a brighter future. But, Kirsten seemed to sense that, and found understanding words and suggestions that turned my outlook towards optimism, and had me reaching deeper into myself to get through that dry spell.
Play squeaky? “Listen to this, and play along with me; listen to my tone and see if you can match it. Your F’s are a little high; need to be flatter. Move your finger a little on the string. Let’s play it together. See the spacing between second and third fingers here? Hold your bow this way and keep your fingers flexible. Watch how my hand works, then you try it. “ And it goes on, and on. Kirsten never seems to tire of coaching and mentoring.
What a contrast. An old guy with modest capabilities being taught by a thorough professional that makes her living with the NSO. A professional musician who can shrink the gulf between what she can do so well and what I struggle to learn, but always a friendly adult who can teach as though it is all that really mattered.
We revere and recognize those who enrich our lives, especially our teachers. They help us reach our goals. Kirsten Mitchell is one of the most memorable people I’ve met.

In teaching lessons, it is my great pleasure to share with students of all ages and skill levels the knowledge that I've gained over 27 years of playing. I firmly believe that anyone can learn anything at any time, given the proper tools!

In our first lesson, we will determine your musical goals and create a realistic path to achieving them. It's my job to help you along this path while keeping things fun.

To maintain focus and week-to-week continuity, I always provide lesson notes to take home. I can also provide recordings of lessons and transcriptions of pieces, if desired.

About Elias

At 5 years old I was struck by the incredible beauty of Vivaldi's music, and ever since I've been playing violin. I hold a BA from Oberlin College of Arts and Sciences, won a scholarship to the Baroque Performance Institute in 2005 and attended the BPI again in 2006. Apart from teaching, as a profes

I've been taking lessons with Elias for over 6 months now and it has been a great experience. I started taking lessons as an adult who previously studied a little violin and wanted to learn Fiddle. He is knowledgeable, patient and has come up with lessons that were perfect for my background. I'm thrilled about the progress I've made so far and taking lessons from someone who loves music as much as Elias has added a real highlight to my week.

Elias is the best! Such a knowledge and passion of music. He has been my sons guitar instructor going on 5 months. My son has learned so much and always enjoys and looks forward to his lessons. My son is is not only learning guitar but violin as well from him. Fantastic instructor A+

I am very impressed with Elias! He listened well, offered helpful suggestions, laughed and was very congenial to work with. We discussed how to hold a bow and, since I have some arthritis in my hands, he was very open to other possible options that might work better for me. Taking lessons from him will be a bright spot in my week. I would recommend him in a heart beat!

Perhaps you are no stranger to the instrument, but need improvement of musicianship, expression, etc. Let me help you master the skills you're trying to achieve. With my help, you can make breathtaking music!

My 16-year-old ---who had not practiced for over a year---is absolutely loving her lessons with Ms. Avenira! With only 3 lessons, I am now seeing the spark for playing the violin return to my daughter's eyes. Ms. Avenira is meeting my daughter "where she is" and truly customizing lessons to move her forward. She provides detailed updates for each lesson, and I could not be happier with my investment. Excellent teacher.
Michelle P.
Avenira really connected with my 14 year old, while our daughter has always been enthusiastic to learn an instrument, putting in the practice and the work has been a challenge in the past. Avenira's format, which allows flexibility for how the student learns best, is really working. My daughter has been practicing every night (unprompted by us), and is really excited abut her next lesson with Avenira. She also loves that she can learn both guitar and piano with Avenira, since she is interested in both. Avenira was very motivating, complimenting our daughter for being focused and for doing a great job during the lesson. Definitely would rate Avenira A+++++++!!

Mr. Jesse is a very effective teacher and my 16 year old daughter has progressed very quickly in playing classical guitar and violin in just under two years. The lessons are very productive while still being very enjoyable. I'd recommend him for both for students who are learning a new instrument or already have a musical background.

Violin:
A wooden stringed instrument in the violin family; it is the smallest and highest-pitched. The violin typically has four strings tuned in perfect fifths, and is most commonly played by drawing a bow across its strings, though it can also be played by plucking the strings with the fingers (pizzicato). Violins are important instruments in a wide variety of musical genres. They are most prominent in the Western classical tradition and in many varieties of folk music. They are also frequently used in genres of folk including country music and bluegrass music and in jazz. Electric violins are used in some forms of rock music; further, the violin has come to be played in many non-Western music cultures, including Indian music and Iranian music. The violin is sometimes informally called a fiddle, particularly in Irish traditional music and bluegrass, but this nickname is also used regardless of the type of music played on it.
Lessons always start with the basics: Tuning, hand/bow

Karen obviously loves the piano & guitar. She’s probably an excellent teacher for those instruments. Why do I say that? That’s what she talked about! She spent half my lesson trying to convince me to learn one of those instruments. Could work on listening skills! Not even sure if she owns a set of bongos herself. Didn’t start teaching me anything until last 10 min & then I had to leave early anyway. So 50 min out of 60 and about 5 I actually learned a few things I could have been practicing for at least 30 min of class. Use her if you want to learn something else other than bongos.

Ms. Karen did a pretty good job, she had ideas for the lesson and provided ideas for the next lesson. She went out of her way to help me with this new idea---------"music" and "reading music." If there was any short fall in the lesson it was on my side and my preparation failings. I have no problem recommending Ms. Karen to others. Regards, JC
Troy W.
Extremely knowledgeable! Karen is a superb guitar instructor. Honestly, I was struggling. Discouraged! She helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and moved me from beginner to intermediate in a matter of months. If you’re getting tired of learning from YouTube and smart phone apps, let Karen kick start your guitar playing. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks Karen!!

Teaching Violin in Hendersonville

By Christina M.-Hendersonville Violin Teacher

Having the opportunity to teach violin lessons in Hendersonville, TN has been rewarding in so many ways. As a TakeLessons instructor, I am able to teach and learn from my students, which is interesting and fun! I teach beginner to intermediate piano and violin in Hendersonville, TN. One of my violin students, Adam Hatcher, is a unique violin player because he plays left handed violin! Adam borrowed a left-handed violin from a friend and in order to play a left-handed violin, he has to hold the violin on his right shoulder instead of his left shoulder, and use his right hand on the finger board and his left to pull the bow along the strings. It took me a few minutes or so to play a little on the left-handed violin. However, I am still

...

unable to hold it correctly on the right side of my body. However, Adam is doing a great job of holding the violin and pulling the bow along the strings.

Adam is progressing quickly on the violin. He also plays guitar, so reading music and rhythm come easily to him. Within two weeks Adam was able to play “Mary had a little lamb” with accurate intonation, rhythm, and bowing. Watching Adam play has helped improve my playing, and the advice I give Adam is often useful for me as well. Also, I find playing along with Adam, while he is performing his exercises really helps his learning. I look forward to seeing Adam mature as a violin player.
