Theory and Composition were my primary areas of study in college. I have a songwriting vlog with over 2,000 subscribers and have written songwriting and music theory articles for Soundfly.com and PBS Digital Studios. I love teaching people how to apply these tools to a broad musical landscape. My motto is that there are no rules in music, only trends, know them to break them.

Theory encompasses many parameters of music, but more important than memorizing a bunch of terminology and learning how to build different scales is asking WHY the artist made certain choices or WHY a certain moment in a musical work feels the way it does. Then you use your knowledge of the nuts and bolts of music gained in your lessons to figure out the answer. This approach gives you a new perspective on the music you love and makes you a more informed performer, songwriter, and producer able to apply lesson concepts to your own music.

About Chris

Hi there! I'm a Juilliard-trained composer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer currently serving as the Dean of California College of Music in Pasadena. I've worked in both modern classical and popular music styles, and my music has appeared in many places: - Cirque du Soleil - Carn

Studying with Chris has been awesome. We started working together on music theory and since then he has helped me to better understand songwriting, live performance and sound production. I feel so much more confident in my abilities as a musician with the skills I’ve leaned from him. Chris is patient and very thorough. There were several moments when learning music theory that I felt I wasn’t picking it up fast enough and he continued to review the material with me until I understood it. Chris is very fluid in his teaching approach. He is able to shift from one topic to another based on what I am wanting to focus on in each lesson. My favorite part of working with his has been diving deep into my original songs and brainstorming ways to improve them. Chris always has tons of ideas to offer that are rooted in theory which makes them both practical and effective.

Chris is a magnificent teacher. I had an elementary level of music theory when we started last year. Now I am able to hear music in ways that I simply could not before. As a teacher, he is patient and has a great sense of humor. I recommend studying with him if you are attempting to level up your musicianship skills.

I can show how to match musical theory into what a student wants to to play or learn around the same time. This allows him/her to simultaneously understand how theory applies to their learning process and expand the possibilities and understanding whether he/she is a singer or a instrumentalist, or both. Music theory may not be the most desirable subject to learn but by linking it to what they already know it opens many, many doors and this is where the epiphanies and fun begins.

About George

"Music Theory and Music Performance

Ms. Wilma's enthusiasm for life and music shines through in her instrumental playing and teaching style. She shows a strong proficiency in many music genres and can teach different kinds of musical instruments.

She's reliable, experienced, professional, and easy to be around. One of her main strengths is her ability to convey musical thoughts in a way that is meaningful, constructive and easily understood.
I really enjoyed how she have enriched my ability to think about musical concepts, discuss theories in music, and listen to different types of music."
