I truly believe that anyone can learn to sing! All voice lessons start with an emphasis on healthy singing that is appropriate for the singer’s age. Students will learn correct posture, breathing, acting, and vocal placement so that whether the goal is to sing in a musical, on stage at church, improve as a singer-songwriter, or be ready for a college audition, you will be prepared for a lifetime of healthy singing. Lessons will be catered to the specific goals of each student and there will be opportunities to perform in studio recitals.

I have been teaching private music lessons for over a decade: voice, piano, and guitar from toddlers to adults. My students have gone on to study music in college, be cast in lead roles in musicals, lead worship at churches, and even be chosen to perform on Broadway in Music Theatre International productions. They have been chosen for Mid State Honors Choirs, All-State Choirs, and have performed all over the country.

I received a Bachelor’s of ...

I have a simple, no-nonsense approach to vocal training, helping students build the vocal strength and coordination necessary to sing efficiently, using principles and exercises learned through over a decade of intensive vocal study in NYC.

Please be advised that I expect students to learn their music on their own (although I'll certainly give you some learning strategies, help with tricky passages, etc.). If you are looking for someone to "teach you the notes," I'm probably not who you're looking for. But, if you want to learn how to sing well and are willing to put in the work, I'd love to help you achieve your goals!

About Ted

My name is Ted D. and I have been teaching private lessons in both guitar and voice for over a decade. I began playing guitar at age eleven and continued into college, where I majored in guitar performance. While in college I began studying voice seriously, adding a vocal performance major to my deg

Ted has helped me more in just a few short months of lessons than all the other teachers I've had in the past. My confidence has soared. My voice is stronger and my range is growing. I highly recommend Ted to anyone trying to improve their singing voice. I just can't say enough good things about him.
Mariah
Ted is an absolutely phenomenal instructor and I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to strengthen their vocal abilities. I’ve been singing my whole life and have been the lead singer in a band for 2 years, but had never had any technical training. Over the course of 8 lessons, my range has drastically increased, and my voice sounds clearer, stronger, and more professional. Aside from being a wonderful teacher, Ted is patient, kind, funny, knowledgeable, and made me feel very at ease. I definitely plan on taking more lessons with him in the future!
Kat
I could not speak more highly of Ted as both an instructor and person. I started voice lessons with very little confidence & musical knowledge, and in just a few months of working with Ted have become MUCH more confident and skilled as a singer/performer. Ted is professional, patient, informative, humorous, encouraging, and most of all passionate about helping students reach their musical goals. I would highly recommend Ted for singers seeking professional careers in voice, as well as people simply wanting to improve their voice and boost their confidence.

"Wonderful!

In short, Rachel is a wonderful, attentive and expert vocal teacher!
I have studied jazz vocal ten years ago and always struggled with confidence issues when singing. They have gotten so bad that I've stopped singing for long enough to let my voice get out of shape. But if you are reading this, you probably feel what I've felt - life without singing is a little gray. Fortunately, I've found Rachel, who has a gorgeous voice and whose music tastes and sensibilities are very similar to mine. Rachel makes me feel at ease, she listens carefully to my goals and identifies actual (vs. my own imaginary) issues with my voice/technique. Mostly importantly she was able to explain to me the processes and techniques of singing that other teachers couldn't. Rachel is an optimistic, massively encouraging presence, she is precise and like a doctor will hear what is happening in your voice and observe/correct your technique. She will guide you and prescribe you the exercises and songs you will need to progress. I highly recommend Rachel as a teacher."

A Quick Guide to Music City: Taking Singing Lessons in Madison, TN

By Tyler J. - Nashville Singing Teacher

Some call it Music City, some call it Nash Vegas, and now, I call it home. Whatever you call it, Nashville, Tennessee is an undeniable force in the modern music industry. With ever-expanding urban sprawl and a quickly growing population, the secret's out that Middle Tennessee is the place to be, especially for musicians. Every day, singers and other performers move here with hopes of "hitting it big," whether that be as a superstar singer-songwriter, an indie-rock trendsetter, or a "behind the scenes" songwriter or sideman. Whatever your dreams are, they can be attained here if you play your cards right.

Here's a quick guide to help you navigate the eclectic and creative Nashville scene while taking singing lessons in Madison, TN.

...

>

Wherever you go in the Nashville area, you will have a hard time NOT running into other singers and players. To dive in face-first, lower Broadway is a chunk of downtown that's lined with honky-tonk bars playing (mostly) country and rock music. One cruise or walk down the street and you'll hear a cacophony of clashing cymbals, rockin' guitars, and singers belting their hearts out. The mix of players and singers on Broadway includes Nashville newbies, as well as seasoned veterans who might be in town between tour dates. It's not entirely uncommon to see someone like Keith Urban walk in and play two or three songs, either - so musicians down here know they have to stay on their toes. If you're looking for work in the touring circuit, a lot of those players and music directors are playing or hanging out on Broadway, so to spend time down here is useful in order to become a familiar face. But, Broadway is just the beginning…

For a taste of some of the best singer-songwriters in town, there are writers' rounds and writers' nights all around the city. The most well-known venue for such a show is the Bluebird Cafe. An intimate environment where they insist that you silence your phones and majorly frown upon talking during a song, the Bluebird is where you'll hear some of the biggest hits played by those who wrote them. For me, a trip to the Bluebird always inspires me to write more songs, and helps me to critique my own work by comparing mine to theirs. Truth is, hit songs are hits because they're great - so jump in and expose your ears to the best writers Nashville has to offer. Don't forget to buy advance tickets, because to say that seating is limited is an understatement. Check out their website here: http://bluebirdcafe.com/index.cfm.

One of my favorite joints in town is The 5 Spot located in the artsy, eclectic East Nashville area of Five Points (http://the5spotlive.com/blog/index.php/event-calendar). An authentic dive bar serving up craft beer, The 5 Spot is where you can go and hear plenty of incredible local original music. From indie rock to alt-country, this venue covers a wide range of creative territory. If you want to see some of the cutting-edge alternative scene - this is where to check it out. For me, it's great to check out places like this, because there's no limit to the creative capacity of East Nashville. The 5 Spot is a place to go and think outside the box, and probably see some cool tattoos while you're at it.

Every summer, usually around the end of August, Nashville hosts the "Live on the Green" music festival, featuring indie and alternative music. Right in the heart of downtown, this free event brings in tons of locals just to enjoy the sun and rock out to some fantastic music. This is where you'll hear more well-known indie artists that play on the festival circuit (think Bonnaroo, Coachella, etc.). It's creatively inspiring, tons of fun, and hey, it costs you absolutely nothing, so you might as well check it out.

Please remember that these are just a few suggestions. It would be literally impossible to write about every venue or event happening in the greater Nashville area. It's hard to come to Nashville and not find yourself surrounded by other singers and players; for this reason, it's important to always bring your "A-game" and keep a positive attitude, because most of the work here is acquired by word-of-mouth. Everywhere you go, don't be shy to chat with the people around you. That guy next to you at the coffee shop MIGHT need someone exactly like you to play sessions at his studio, or to sing on the road with his band. Almost all the time, people find their gigs by being friends with the people who have openings, so it's important to remember that building positive personal relationships, in addition to working hard at your craft, will be your key to success. I encourage every singer and player to at least visit Nashville to see how amazing this musical community is. Best of luck in your singing lessons in Madison - I'll see you on Broadway.
