I teach beginning saxophone students basic note reading. Advanced students can learn theory and improvisation.

About John

I have been teaching young people and adults how to play musical instruments for over 20 years. A lot of my students are well on their way to a rewarding future with music, some as professionals and others as hobbyists. In addition to being a teacher, I am also a professional performer who has worke

My son has taken piano lessons with John in studio and online for several years. John gets kids playing and enjoying music quickly. John and my son have a great rapport and he has helped encourage my son’s music interests.
I wasn’t sure about online lessons when Covid started, but they have been going very well. John is always timely and prepared.

My children took online lessons with John for 6 months. They were not beginners; rather they had many years of prior experience. Our need for a new teacher was due to our previous teacher retiring. My children have always loved and excelled at their music lessons, and they've had a wonderful rapport with their previous teachers.

John would often come to piano lessons unprepared. He would spend a significant portion of the lesson sight-reading and fumbling over a piece, trying to figure out how it was supposed to sound before attempting to teach it to my child. Then he would become impatient when my child had a question or thought it was supposed to be played differently. Once I was compelled to intervene because John became noticeably upset with my child, accusing him of arguing, when my child had merely pointed out a legitimate problem with an instruction he had given. John admitted he had been impatient and apologized. It also bears noting that my child, with whom John lost composure, is autistic. John was well aware of this.

Most recently, my younger child had some similar confusion/questioning over an instruction that was given. John flew into a tantrum, repeatedly accusing my child of arguing. His voice was raised, he was clearly upset. In addition he told my child "you're really stressing me out...maybe I'm just not the right teacher for you...usually with my piano students we have a lot of fun but you just keep arguing...maybe you're just having a bad day..." At this point I intervened. John continued to repeat himself - I had to raise my voice in order to be heard. I identified myself, asked what the problem was - what was my child arguing about? He just kept repeating "you're just arguing" without addressing me or giving any specifics. I responded "John, am I arguing with you? I'm just trying to ask a question." John raised his camera, at which point I observed he was red in the face, sweating, shaking and rocking back and forth in distress. He had completely lost control. Then he spoke again to my child - who was sitting quietly, in total shock - instructing him to play the piece again. I said "I think we need to be done for today." Before I ended the call, my child managed to squeak out a "thank you." As soon as it was over he burst into tears. This was the first time in over eleven years of devoting time, money and hard work into music lessons that a teacher made one of my children cry.

John took no responsibility for his grossly unprofessional behavior. I had hoped he would calm down and at least acknowledge how completely out of line he had been. Unfortunately that was not the case, and instead he dropped my children, citing a sudden schedule conflict.

I wish I didn't feel compelled to write this review, but my attempt to resolve the incident privately was unsuccessful. My sole purpose for sharing this information is to prevent a traumatic experience from happening to anyone else's child. Learning music should be challenging, enriching and joyful. The teacher ought to come prepared, and absolutely must be in control of his or her mental and emotional state. This was not our experience with John, thus I absolutely do not recommend him.

After studying this instrument for nearly 20 years, I can safely say the electric guitar is the most exciting and expressive instrument in the modern age. My goal with all of my students is to help you cut through the noise and find your voice while building the foundational skills that make this instrument so versatile!

About Michael

Expressing yourself is the ultimate goal of music and my job is to help you get your point across! Like any musician, music is my life. I love to soak it in any way I can! Whether it be listening to records, jamming with my friends or watching all the live concert footage of Stevie Ray Vaughan
