Rina is a wonderful teacher. From the perspective of an adult student, her understanding of the challenges an adult beginner experiences puts the student at ease when taking lessons with her. While exhibiting such empathy, Rina will always inspire the student to become a better musician. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would.

To me, learning any instrument is about balancing the exercises with the fun material that makes you want to keep playing. I am a technique-focused teacher insofar as making sure any student of mine is avoiding bad and sometimes unhealthy habits in their playing. I do, however, try to find fun ways to work on technique, with the end goal being playing repertoire that is fun for the student. I believe technical exercises have their place in learning any instrument, but that it's important to spend the majority of your practice time on material which is ultimately enjoyable to play.

I do have certain sets of books I like to follow depending on the student's interests and age, but I am always happy to tweak the lesson plan to fit the student's needs. I also tend to supplement whichever books I'm using with material of my own, to make sure we're also covering important topics such as music theory and maybe a bit of relevant music history in the process.

About Joshua

Hi there! My name is Josh, and I'd love to be your teacher! I've been playing guitar since I was eight, starting out playing rock and roll, then focusing on classical training for my college career. In both undergraduate and graduate school, I studied classical composition as a classical guitarist,

Joshua has helped me become a better guitar player by showing me how I can work towards my goals, and giving me exercises, information and musical practice that makes my goals attainable. Joshua is a student-directed teacher, and he has worked with me to focus on my areas of interest (songwriting and fingerstyle/chord work). He is willing to answer questions, responsive to ideas, and able to explain difficult concepts. I've learned things that will help me improve my guitar playing for years. Thank you, Joshua.
Ashlyn
I was self taught when I started taking lessons, Josh helped me fix some bad habits that helped me push my playing to the next level!
Marco
I grew up on bossa, and wanted to learn how to play it. I had played guitar for years but mostly rock and folk. Josh was able to take what I knew and teach me how to play bossa music.

Ruben is a great instructor and very flexible. He tailors his lesson strategy to the student's goals and creates a supportive environment. His focus is on building a solid understanding of music structures first and then applying to the guitar.

There was some confusion with the 'take lessons' website in that it scheduled my lesson for CST when both I and Ruben are in PST. I didn't spot it until 'day of' and Ruben was gracious and flexible in still being able to do the lesson at the later time. Not his fault and I appreciate his willingness to adjust his schedule once the issue was realized.

"Nothing but good things to say about Brendon. Aside from his insane talent as a composer and musician, he was phenom with our son Max. A few thoughts below...

We knew Brendon was the right person to help our son Max on day one with TakeLessons, when we wrote to 4 or 5 potential instructors. The other folks wrote back and just said 'sure, I'm here, happy to help'. But Brendon wrote back with thoughts about the pieces Max needed to learn for his audition, a rough outline of a plan, and shared enough about himself that we knew he had truly 'heard' what we needed were looking for. That kind of thoughtfulness is unique.

Brendon is great with kids, and created instant rapport with Max over the video lessons. Brendon will always spend a little extra time than budgeted, which is appreciated. And his scheduling was flexible which always helps with us busy families. We did a few in person lessons and Max came away inspired - for classical guitar but also for music in general. Max's skills grew throughout, and he never resisted practicing; he looked forward to the lessons and the chance to talk about some guitar-related thing with Brendon.

Brendon isn't a big disciplinarian so after a few weeks I had a little chat with Max about what it means to respect your teacher, even if they seem young and cool and are on video. That's something I think parents need to monitor a little.

Recommended w/o any hesitation. If you have Brendon in mind you're headed in the right direction for sure. -MR"

Should Classical Violinists Learn to Improvise?

A few weeks ago the Washington Post published an article about musician Hannah Hanh and her struggles with improvisation.  As a classical violinist, she hadn't had much training for spontaneity, naturally. The article points out improvisation as a technique that has fallen by the wayside for many performers these days. And it asks an interesting question: Can (and should) classical musicians learn to improvise? We've talked a lot about improvising on the guitar and drums, but where do classi …

10+ Essential Classical Guitar Exercises | Sheet Music and Video

Earlier, we took a look at how to develop your right hand for classical guitar. In this article, guitar teacher Raymond L. will add to the balance by teaching you exercises for the left hand... The classical guitar repertoire covers more scales and arpeggios than any other technical skill. Therefore, I consider it important for you, as a classical guitar player or student, to focus on these following guitar exercises. They're based on scales and arpeggios for the purpose of devel …
