As a professional upright bass player for the past eight or so years, I have toured both domestically and internationally. Drawing from these years of experience, I can help you with any thing from the basics to what to know for a professional gig. I can teach classical technique, Jazz soloing/walking, how to get good sound/intonation, and give help for those trying to bridge the gap into the professional realm.

About Christopher

In my many years of teaching and being taught I have realized that the best teachers are those who really focus on the needs of the student and help them realize their passion for playing music. This usually involves a lesson plan which combines both technical aspects and working on songs, so that

I've taken bass lessons from Chris for about a year. He's a very skilled musician and is also very good at communicating in a way that makes concepts easier to understand. He has a laid back personality that makes lessons enjoyable but he still demands effort. Overall, I would recommend taking lessons from Chris

I have no musical background, but I thought it would be fun to learn the guitar as an adult (I'm 31). A friend recommended that I take lessons from Chris; there's no question that Chris was qualified. Overly qualified! But it's not Chris' talent that makes him an effective, influential teacher. Rather, it's his calm demeanor and clear vision of how best to teach the basics and mechanics.

It's be a blast learning from Chris. Our weekly lesson is always a highlight for me! He's as great as they get.

I’ve done both in-home & remote lessons with Chris. Chris is a really great teacher, with a deep knowledge of music theory and technique, but also the ability to adjust that to whatever level you’re coming in at. I was a near complete beginner with a lot of anxiety about playing in front of other people when we started and Chris was able to work through that with me with a lot of humor and kindness. His agenda is to work with his students on songs they are interested in learning, and along the way weave in lessons on how notes and chords work, which I’ve really enjoyed. He also teaches bass guitar to my teenage daughter, who really enjoys her lessons and has improved greatly since they began. I highly recommend Chris.

I have been playing professionally since I was 14, and full time since I was 20. I am a seasoned pro who has toured with three different Broadway shows, worked on cruise ships for six years, and played with a myriad of very famous artists in jazz and beyond. I have released an album and a single, and there is another album on the way this year. I have classical training, but I am primarily a jazz musician, so I apply the strictest of fundamental classical technique to my jazz playing and do the same for my students. Ever thought about soloing with the bow, for example? I can help you learn to do that!
I also work on ear training and theory with all of my students.
I have studied with Mike Richmond, Ron McClure, Victor Wooten, Steve Bailey, Anthony Wellington, and many other amazing players and teachers.

About Ross

Ross Kratter is a bass player, tuba player, and composer based in Orlando. He is equally at home on string bass and electric bass, both fretted and fretless, 4, 5, and 6 string, as well as on tuba. While primarily known as a jazz musician, he is equally comfortable in any and all styles of music. R

You will learn posture using French or German bow. You will be guided by me through method books and use supplemental materials I create for you to advance. You will learn some jazz styles and how the bass works in a rhythm section. You will learn about chord progressions in songs. I've been teaching upright for 5 years. You will learn to make the bass sing as a solo instrument. Most of my students have gone on to play in jazz combos and trios. I want to be your next instructor.

so far so good. very happy my son involved in online lessons with JAMES! thank you
Chris C.
I took around 15 lessons for bass guitar with James and really enjoyed it. James was able to tailor the experience for what I wanted, which was heavy on music theory, but still made sure we applied the theory to the instrument. I had prior experience with some music theory and playing, but hadn't touched my bass in almost 10 years. James was able to figure out exactly where to pick up, provided great materials, and kept me engaged. James is very knowledgeable, a great player, and a cool cat.
Tom
James is a highly qualified instructor and was very thoughtful in answering my questions. I was impressed with the amount of resources he had on hand, such as worksheets, method books, sheet music, etc. I would definitely recommend James for anyone curious about learning music theory and/or the many instruments he plays.

"My son Ethan started working with Darren early this summer after Ethan's previous instructor for 5 years had decided to retire . I was surprised how quickly Ethan was bonded with Darren in this virtual setting. Due to Covid 19, all lessons have been conducted via Skype. Here is what Ethan was talking about Darren. "I have nothing but good words to say about my experience with Mr. Sacks. within a few weeks, I improved a lot. He was able to help me fix fundamental issues with my playing. He was also incredibly kind and patient with me. Mr. Sacks was also always able to explain things well and give me new ways to improve my playing. He doesn't let go of my mistakes but very encouraging when providing advice.""

"My 11 year old has attended an after school music program in our district for a few years playing the double bass. When Covid hit, she was no longer able to continue learning, but her music teacher recommended her to audition for a selective music program at Berklee College of Music. That's when I reached out to Darren via his website to see if he could work with my child for the 8 week period to prepare for the online audition submission.

Darren worked with her every week on a completely new song, introduced great techniques that enabled her to learn quickly and develop new skills. Those 8 weeks were very productive as my she learned the entire song, did the audition and was accepted into the Berklee music program. Darren is a very knowledgeable and dedicated music instructor and I am grateful to him for helping my daughter get into a selective music program. The online lessons from Darren are exceptional. You will not be disappointed with his instructions."

"I searched for an excellent upright bass teacher for a good while. Then I found David Lloyd. David is patient, humorous, friendly, knowledgeable and very professional. He carefully taught me all the necessary groundwork to enable me to continue on my own for a while. In a few months I will, without question, continue my studies with David. I would, without hesitation, recommend David to anyone interested in seriously studying the Upright Bass."

"Darren is one of the best teachers I've ever worked with. I am a life-long electric bass player that fell in love with the sound and vibe of the upright last year. The double bass is a beautiful and rewarding instrument, but very difficult to get started on without the guidance of a caring mentor. I had previously tried self-teaching using YouTube workshops and video lessons, but had trouble making any progress. I also suffer from a chronic pain condition, and it seemed like no matter what I tried, I was constantly re-injuring my wrist.
In search of professional help, I discovered Darren. In our initial meeting Darren conveyed a true interest in helping me, and quickly diagnosed and fixed the posture struggles that were causing pain. I gained more understanding of the upright bass in our first lesson than in 6+ months on my own!
As an adult learner, Darren never made me insecure or afraid to ask questions. His warm personality and ability to demystify elements of classical bass really makes him an amazing educator!
After taking lessons with Darren this summer, I proudly felt confident to check off "Upright Bass" as my primary instrument of study at the local community college music program I attend."
