Your ear is your single most important tool for navigating music, whether as a performer, a listener, a composer, a producer, or an improviser. The best path to a better ear is to dig deep into the music you love, and that's exactly what we do. Using techniques I learned over 10 years of studying jazz, you'll learn how to recognize and produce all the different harmonic resonances, chord qualities, and rhythmic patterns available in how to sing and transcribe melodies and chord progressions, and how to apply those skills and knowledge to your own music-making. You'll apply that foundation to learn music that excites you entirely by ear, empowering you to study anything you can listen to. You'll learn to hear the music you love in new ways, and discover new sounds to fill your ears with and translate onto your instrument.

Ear training can be one of the most fun parts of music practice, and I'd love to help you out with yours- shoot me a message and we can get started : )

About Ethan

My musical life started at the piano when I was four. I've spent the last five years helping students understand the sounds that speak to them and bring them into their own music-making. I spent my early years playing piano, then picked up the saxophone, which took me to Berklee College of Music,

Ethan is such a great guy, and he taught me more about singing than I thought I was capable of learning. You're missing out if you haven't studied with him

Ethan is truly an amazing saxophone teacher! I started learning the saxophone on my own but had been plateauing for months. Thanks to Ethan, I learned very useful tips - ranging from music theory to practical advises - and I can now feel myself progressing again. What’s impressed me the most with Ethan are his passion for the music, his dedication to transmitting his love for the saxophone and his desire to find the find the best teaching approach for each of his students.
Matthew
The way I view music and life in general has shifted in the best way possible. Stoked to have been apart of Ethan's lessons and recommend anyone interested in music to do the same. The things I never even begun to understand about music are now commonplace and serve to better my understanding of music as a whole.

I am a NJ Certified Science Teacher with 26 years public school teaching experience, including teaching AP Chemistry. Since retiring, I found I absolutely love online tutoring, and my students look forward to their lessons with me. I build their confidence and understanding. As a professional teacher, I know how to uncover the difficulties specific to each individual and guide them toward success. Rather than just explaining a concept to them, I lead my students with questions and examples so they can solve it themselves. With true understanding rather than mere memorization, grades naturally improve. I am especially good at teaching how to solve word problems.

My online equipment includes a laptop with webcam, 2nd monitor, 4K document camera, headphone/mic, and iPad (if you also have a tablet, we can use it as a collaborative, real-time whiteboard, much superior than the whiteboard provided by Zoom). I can also show you how to use your phone as makeshift document camera, so I can ...

Bluegrass Guitar:
Bluegrass music is a form of American roots music, and a related genre of country music. Influenced by the music of Appalachia, bluegrass has mixed roots in Irish, Scottish and English traditional music, and was also later influenced by the music of African-Americans through incorporation of jazz elements. Besides the standard basics that are learned with guitar, I will help the student focus on learning the blues scales, chords, rhythms, and picking, strumming patterns and songs. As the student advances theory will be introduced and learning how to solo.

About Karen

Karen obviously loves the piano & guitar. She’s probably an excellent teacher for those instruments. Why do I say that? That’s what she talked about! She spent half my lesson trying to convince me to learn one of those instruments. Could work on listening skills! Not even sure if she owns a set of bongos herself. Didn’t start teaching me anything until last 10 min & then I had to leave early anyway. So 50 min out of 60 and about 5 I actually learned a few things I could have been practicing for at least 30 min of class. Use her if you want to learn something else other than bongos.

Ms. Karen did a pretty good job, she had ideas for the lesson and provided ideas for the next lesson. She went out of her way to help me with this new idea---------"music" and "reading music." If there was any short fall in the lesson it was on my side and my preparation failings. I have no problem recommending Ms. Karen to others. Regards, JC

Extremely knowledgeable! Karen is a superb guitar instructor. Honestly, I was struggling. Discouraged! She helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and moved me from beginner to intermediate in a matter of months. If you’re getting tired of learning from YouTube and smart phone apps, let Karen kick start your guitar playing. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks Karen!!

She’s made me feel awesome about the things I excel at, but won’t let me be lazy about the things I need to work on.

"I booked a package (10 lessons) with Orla to help me gain confidence in my choral singing abilities. I was nervous at first, but she was patient and made me comfortable very quickly. She is very knowledgeable about anatomy and the "how" of singing, but even more importantly, she can communicate the visual, physical and emotional cues that are so critical to learning to sing properly. We focused on exercises to improve the areas I needed the most work on, and I could see the improvement in my singing in just a few lessons! As the lessons flew by, she "leveled me up" in areas that I was doing well in, and kept on working with me on the techniques that are a bit more difficult for me. I could tell that she was really engaging with me as an individual, and making me the best singer I could be.

Overall an extremely positive experience - I would recommend Orla to anyone in the area looking for a vocal teacher."

What’s the Difference Between Professional and Student Violins?

Getting the right instrument is one of the most important decisions in a musician's life. The right violin will feel comfortable in your hands, respond accurately and consistently to your touch, and help you produce the best possible sound for your level of musical development. Students learning the violin can rent or purchase instruments from music instrument retailers, and they offer a variety of instruments that can seem daunting for the novice violin purchaser.
