I started playing acoustic guitar when I was seven years old. I then started traveling more and found the mandolin to be so much easier to carry around and so much fun, it was hard to stop playing it. I have been playing and teaching mostly bluegrass, old time, Irish, blues, folk, and swing jazz styles for many years. I have taught both privately and have also done various workshops at festivals. I have taught multiple years for instance at the Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival in PA, The Traditions week at Common Ground on the Hill Festival in MD, Delaware Valley Festival, Grey Fox Festival, etc. I have taught all ages of students- from young kids to folks in their 90's. I have taught for schools, art organizations, run my own music camps, and have taught at plenty of workshops and camps led by others. I have performed professionally in various line ups over many years in a variety of styles. I have performed at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, National Geographic, The 9:30 Club, Grey ...

Tara is a wonderful, enthusiastic, and knowledgable teacher! As someone new to mandolin, she quickly broke down the basics and was able to provide me with the foundations of playing bluegrass, blues, jazz, and more on the mandolin. I feel much more confident with my playing because of her and plan to continue coming back to learn more in the future! You'll also be guaranteed to laugh from her jokes, which lightens the struggle of learning an instrument : )

In just 2 of 5 lessons, I am already better. Tara has helped me build some basic chord theory and knowledge that I never understood as a G, C, D guitarist. I have not taken lessons since I was 10 and took piano - at 48, lessons are not so intimidating. Looking forward to learning more!

Tara is a very knowledgeable and easy-going instructor. Her ability to teach theory in bite-sized chunks while keeping the lesson light and fun is extremely commendable. No grad-school music theory textbooks here, just color-coded fun. Her mnemonic devices are also hilarious. 6/5 stars

Nick is a wonderful teacher. I came to him because I found that I was not able to translate what is in my head to the music, in my songwriting. I was literally hindered by my lack of knowledge and playing skills. I felt comfortable that Nick understood what I needed, and I like how he met me exactly where I was, providing lessons for me- individualized, personalized, and accessible yet enough to challenge me.

Thank you, Nick.

Amazing instructor. Patient and knowledgeable.

Nick was a patient and enthusiastic teacher. I was nervous to start music lessons in my late 30s, but he made me feel comfortable and I never felt embarrassed. He taught me the songs I was interested in learning, but snuck in music theory and the basics along the way! Highly recommend

I've been teaching mandolin for 4 years helping students develop a love for the instrument and learn more about music along the way. Mandolin is an often underappreciated instrument which is fantastic for both melodic and rhythmic playing styles. Within the first few lessons you'll have a solid base of strumming, picking, chord changes and melodic playing, with a couple simple songs too. Moving on from there I will craft lessons to move you toward a "goal song," making sure to cater your progress to your needs while keeping a focus on good technique. I enjoy working with students of all ages and experiences and I can't wait to meet you!

About Ryan

Ryan is a musician from Logan Square who plays a plethora of different instruments. He specializes in guitar, banjo, mandolin and ukulele, but also dabbles in accordion, piano, drums, harmonica and several others. Learning to play instruments is one of the true pleasures in his life and he hopes he

Alex has inspired my son to love playing music for the rest of his life. I can't think of a more wonderful gift. His technique in teaching allowed my son to enjoy learning guitar by playing songs he wanted to play. This made him want to practice just for the fun of it! Alex taught my son from the time he was 9 years old until he was 15. The easy going, positive attitude Alex exudes encouraged my son along his journey and made a strong bond and connection between the two of them. I wholeheartedly encourage anyone who would like to learn to play guitar to sign up for lessons with Alex!

I teach Mandolin using the Suzuki method and then branch out into into bluegrass mandolin playing. The mandolin is tuned like a violin double strings. So the left hand fingering is the same as the violin and the picking is similar to the guitar. If you play the violin then the main thing you need to learn is the right hand picking. If you play the guitar then you will need to learn the left hand fingering. Mandolin is a fun instrument to learn and to play.

I have been teaching music for over fifty years. I have taught many professional teachers and students over the years. I have played professionally in Many Classical and Jazz groups. My quick start method gets beginners playing music right away. I studied classical violin from Don Samuleson, Profe

I took notes because I value his guidance and suggestions.
