To me, learning any instrument is about balancing the exercises with the fun material that makes you want to keep playing. I am a technique-focused teacher insofar as making sure any student of mine is avoiding bad and sometimes unhealthy habits in their playing. I do, however, try to find fun ways to work on technique, with the end goal being playing repertoire that is fun for the student. I believe technical exercises have their place in learning any instrument, but that it's important to spend the majority of your practice time on material which is ultimately enjoyable to play.

I do have certain sets of books I like to follow depending on the student's interests and age, but I am always happy to tweak the lesson plan to fit the student's needs. I also tend to supplement whichever books I'm using with material of my own, to make sure we're also covering important topics such as music theory and maybe a bit of relevant music history in the process.

About Joshua

Hi there! My name is Josh, and I'd love to be your teacher! I've been playing guitar since I was eight, starting out playing rock and roll, then focusing on classical training for my college career. In both undergraduate and graduate school, I studied classical composition as a classical guitarist,

Joshua has helped me become a better guitar player by showing me how I can work towards my goals, and giving me exercises, information and musical practice that makes my goals attainable. Joshua is a student-directed teacher, and he has worked with me to focus on my areas of interest (songwriting and fingerstyle/chord work). He is willing to answer questions, responsive to ideas, and able to explain difficult concepts. I've learned things that will help me improve my guitar playing for years. Thank you, Joshua.
Ashlyn
I was self taught when I started taking lessons, Josh helped me fix some bad habits that helped me push my playing to the next level!
Marco
I grew up on bossa, and wanted to learn how to play it. I had played guitar for years but mostly rock and folk. Josh was able to take what I knew and teach me how to play bossa music.

Hi! My name is Luke. I've been playing drums for 15 years and have been teaching private drum lessons for over 8 years. I love playing many styles ranging from jazz, rock, pop, hip-hop, funk, worship, Afro-Cuban, and classical. I graduated from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music in Los Angeles with both an undergraduate and masters degree. I taught drumset classes at USC for two years and currently teach students from grades 5-12 at a public school here in Nashville. I have a full 8 microphone recording/broadcasting setup for online lessons along with two drum sets for interactive lessons and in-person jamming. We will work on groove, soloing, rudiments, independence, and reading, but above all we will HAVE FUN! Hope to hear from you soon!

About Luke

I've played drums for most of my life and the one thing I always tell my students is to have fun! If the drummer isn't enjoying it, the rest of the band will follow! Through music I've gotten to experience some amazing things such as working on the same bill as T-Pain for a short tour, playing in NY

I have been teaching dance for over 10 years. In that time I have found that, regardless of what style you are learning, everything is made of a few fundamental principals and components specific to that style. There are only so many ways you can move your feet and body. By understanding these principals & components, you can then put them together in any order with different style to create different dances. By laying the proper foundation, students have an easier time following choreography, learning to apply their own style, and even keeping up with a class. Once a dancer has a foundation to work up on, I introduce new concepts in layers to help dances feel better and develop a nicer aesthetic.

About Sasha

Hey, Sasha speaking! I would be thrilled to share my passion for dance with you. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced violinist preparing for an audition, whether your lesson takes place online or in my Nashville studio, I seek to help meet the goals of each student on their journey learning the violin. With 24 years experience as a member of a professional symphony orchestra, I know firsthand how important it is to learn how to play in a way that feels comfortable, without muscle tension. Developing good habits while having fun learning the essentials describes a typical lesson. If you have a favorite song you'd like to learn, feel free to bring it to the lesson!

About Kirsten

I'm a professional violinist in Nashville, TN. I graduated from DePaul university in Chicago with a Bachelor's Degree in Violin Performance. I was also a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, where I received training from the world's top conductors to become a professional orchestral musician.

Me and my daughter had a great experience with Kirsten! She is very warm, flexible, and has a friendly, professional teaching style. An overall lovely person who is very talented at her craft. Would definitely recommend!
Lou
Kirsten Mitchell and I first met in a classroom at Austin Peay University where she was teaching a beginners violin class with individual instruction. Nearly all of her students turned out to be teenagers. Retired, I had already turned 65.
Over time, and with patient, coaching, and encouragement from Kirsten, I have learned to play several
Bach pieces, among others. Each new work requires that yet another skill or technique be learned. We have made our way from great simplicity to greater complexity, each step requiring more control and capacity.
How did we do that? Examples! When my attempts at discovery came short, Kirsten could always provide examples so matter-of-fact that they seldom intimidated. Just try it; just do it! It’s like learning from a big sister or parent who only desires your success and would do what it takes to accomplish that.
There have been times when my vote would have been for her to leave violin study to someone who had a brighter future. But, Kirsten seemed to sense that, and found understanding words and suggestions that turned my outlook towards optimism, and had me reaching deeper into myself to get through that dry spell.
Play squeaky? “Listen to this, and play along with me; listen to my tone and see if you can match it. Your F’s are a little high; need to be flatter. Move your finger a little on the string. Let’s play it together. See the spacing between second and third fingers here? Hold your bow this way and keep your fingers flexible. Watch how my hand works, then you try it. “ And it goes on, and on. Kirsten never seems to tire of coaching and mentoring.
What a contrast. An old guy with modest capabilities being taught by a thorough professional that makes her living with the NSO. A professional musician who can shrink the gulf between what she can do so well and what I struggle to learn, but always a friendly adult who can teach as though it is all that really mattered.
We revere and recognize those who enrich our lives, especially our teachers. They help us reach our goals. Kirsten Mitchell is one of the most memorable people I’ve met.
