I teach beginner and intermediate 5-string banjo and beginner and intermediate tenor banjo. Let's start with the tenor banjo. That great instrument is an integral element in New Orleans jazz and trad. jazz. I'll have you playing great old jazz standards in no time. Now, let's talk about the 5-string banjo. I will teach you to play 5-string banjo in the traditional three-finger style of the great Earl Scruggs. I'm a longtime pro musician and a longtime teacher. I take a practical approach to learning that emphasizes the fun and sense of togetherness that are such vital elements of playing music. Let's go!

My first lesson with Zach was great! 5 stars. He asked the right questions as to what aI am looking to do. And we quickly came up with a lesson plan that with the right amount of work in my part will get me headed in the right direction. Zach does a great job of making his students feel comfortable and good about their abilities.

About Judy

In my early childhood, my parents owned a 77-acre riding stable. There was a radio in the barn that was always on “for the horses” and a jukebox (dating myself here) in the clubhouse. I loved hearing all those songs (of the ‘60’s) and singing along! One day, a man came to ride and also br

Just has taught two of my kids. Currently acoustic guitar and previously ukele with an exchange student. She was wonderful with my German daughter and teaching her to read music and use an instrument. Just keeps my ADHD son on task and challenges his fast moving brain using several techniques, practice methods, and pieces simultaneously. She's patient when he gets off task and quickly shifts gears when he needs a different explanation.

Beginner banjo lessons. Basic technique, chords, strumming. So much fun playing songs!
Disclaimer: I am not a traditional bluegrass player. I am finding many students nowadays that enjoy the sound of banjo, but want to play modern music with it. I have had a great deal of success with this type of student, but advise anyone looking for traditional scruggs lessons to seek that out. Thanks!

"Mike is truly a patient, excellent teacher & communicator. He totally understands my needs and limitations, and always finds a way to address them and thereby helps me move forward. I am absolutely confident that in the very near future I will be able to play the banjo and be able to jam with others - and I attribute all of that to Mike and his approach. My only regret is that I didn't meet him 17 years ago when I first moved to the area and decided to learn to play the banjo. I wholeheartedly recommend him for anyone - he loves to play and he loves to teach."

"Best Banjo player!

I'm new to the banjo, having spent most of my life playing the guitar, acoustic, of course. I'd met Mike at a jam and was very impressed by his abilities. I was surprised to learn that we lived near each other, and I was in touch with him when I returned home. I started lessons with Mike and am now playing much better, due to his help. He's very patient, taking the time to show me not only how to play better, but also how to play with others in a "group" situation. I will continue to take lessons until
I'm as good as he is!"

Are Heavy Metal Banjos The Next Big Thing?

Loud, jangly, and twangy, the banjo is an instrument with a distinctive voice that immediately evokes the spirit of the American South. Long a mainstay of bluegrass music, banjos have recently been incorporated into pop music as well by bands like Mumford and Sons. And, if YouTube trends are any indication, it looks like the banjo is making another genre shift! A pack of viral videos featuring banjo covers of hard rock classics are making the rounds and proving that banjos can shred just a …
