When I was a child my father would play the piano while my mother would cook us dinner. Both of my parents shared with us five children this love for music. My inspiration came from seeing Van Halen in concert in 1982 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco , and that was it. I became a teacher to share that inspiration with others. I've been studying guitar for forty years now and have a knowledge of many styles. I've been inspired by many genres of music, from the 1960's to the present ,not to mention my interest in classical, The Beatles and Chuck Berry.

About Margaret

I love teaching music and want to help you achieve your goals whatever they may be . My teaching style could be described as learning with enthusiasm and curiosity. We will study academic and free form style.

I met Margaret S. as a 50-something man picking up guitar for the first time. Margaret showed great patience walking me through the basics needed by a complete beginner. Six years later I’m still playing and learning, and I owe it all to the inspiration Margaret Instilled in me.
One thing that sets Margaret apart from other teachers I’ve met is her ability to inspire children. She connects with kids easily and she makes them want to learn and practice. I highly recommend her.

I have been playing guitar for over a decade and have tons of performance experience gigging in a local rock band. Combine that with a curriculum that starts with fundamentals and expands quickly into playing your favorite songs and you have a great start to beginning or expanding your guitar playing abilities.

About ryan

Hi, my name is Ryan and I would love to teach you how to play guitar. I've been playing for over 10 years and have been gigging for a little less than that in my band. Over the years I have gained a lot of experience performing on stage and teaching to people of all ages. If you want to shred, jam,

Ryan was great! He's obviously a talented guitarist and he is very laid back and makes you feel comfortable. He shows you in detail what you need to do to become a better guitar player. My ONLY advice, and the reason he doesn't get 5 stars, is I think he should have more visual aids with his lessons. For example, write down the different scales or transcribe the first several measures of a song. Then, one has something to refer back to when you are practicing and invariably get stuck. Other than that, I would highly recommend Ryan as a guitar teacher!

Like many people in my age group (60+) I took lessons as a child and gave them up to career, kids, etc, and now I have the time to play again! Colin is great to work with, he was good at gauging where I am in my piano journey and listening carefully to tailor his lessons to my needs. He gives me as much theory as I can handle or want and is really good and patient when I don't understand. I give him top marks as a teacher!

Colin is a great teacher. I learned to play guitar in middle and high school and hadn't taken a lesson in over 30 years. When I realized I wanted to try lessons again, I found Colin.

He's fun to connect with, relaxed and friendly. He's focused on my goals (learning campfire favorites, classical pieces, finger style, and jazz). And he gives great feedback and constructive tips to keep improving.

Highly recommend!
Julia
Colin has been awesome. Our son is taking lessons for 1.5 years now, mostly online. That's hard enough itself, but Colin managed to teach him amazing songs on the guitar. He is very skilled in all sorts of instruments and has an unique sense of humor and discipline to connect to his students. If you're looking for a great teacher, he's your man.

"When I met David, music had not always been a positive experience. As an older student, I am not always able to practice and I do have other things on my mind. He has never scolded me for not practicing, he is very patient with all my musical hangups, and he keeps meeting me where I am at. I may still not be comfortable with music, but I am comfortable with him."

"Adam is a teacher par excellence. I am self taught from a well known book. I was doing well I thought until I got stuck. Adam gently showed me where I erred and made great suggestions for me to move on correctly. I never felt rushed or “ put down.” Adam was patient, open for questions, encouraging, comforting. I know I need much help to correct and advance in guitar from matters such as tuning, restringing, reading, and other things too many to write about. I look forward to my next lesson with enthusiasm."

Should Classical Violinists Learn to Improvise?

A few weeks ago the Washington Post published an article about musician Hannah Hanh and her struggles with improvisation.  As a classical violinist, she hadn't had much training for spontaneity, naturally. The article points out improvisation as a technique that has fallen by the wayside for many performers these days. And it asks an interesting question: Can (and should) classical musicians learn to improvise? We've talked a lot about improvising on the guitar and drums, but where do classi …
